( Seychelles News Agency ) - In the Seychelles since 1998, MPs and ministers, at the end of their mandate, have the right to a pension even before reaching retirement age, 63 years.
This privilege should be in a few weeks, abolished.
The decision was endorsed by the Council of Ministers which met specially on Monday to discuss several measures announced by the President of Seychelles, James Michel in his address on the state of the nation.
"The Seychellois are wondering how a member who has not yet reached the retirement age can receive a pension after only one term or two terms in the National Assembly," declared Michel in his address on the state of the nation.
The new law will come into force this year, will make everyone receive his retirement at age 63, the retirement age.
Seychelles Attorney General Ronny Govinden , has been instructed to prepare as soon as possible a new law that will be submitted to the deputies.
In the constitution of the Seychelles, there is no mention for a pension for ministers or deputies.
"If there are people who believe they have been affected by this law, they can appeal to the courts," said Govinden.
The board of deputies and ministers was a privilege that was passed unanimously by the National Assembly in 1998.
"The law evolves and adapts according to the demand of ordinary people, it is for this that the government made the decision to give a pension has the retirement age," said Ronny Govinden.
