IOC supports the call of President Michel against drug trafficking
02/27/2016 The IOC endorses the call by President James Michel for a regional leap in the fight against drug trafficking, following the intervention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Transport, Mr. Joel Morgan, the work of the Executive Board IOC this Friday in St Denis.
In his speech to its Indian Ocean peers, Morgan said that the fight against drugs was a challenge against the Indian Ocean which was imperative to mobilize.
"The fight against drugs is a challenge that we can and must win together. Faced with such a difficult and complex struggle, an ambitious and smart regional policy is needed [....] It is in this sense that in his inaugural speech on 20 December, President Michel enrolled for a regional start. He called for the creation, with the IOC, a regional structure of intelligence, coordination and response in the fight against this scourge, "he has said.
Seychelles wish the IOC grasp very quickly this essential question, as we look forward to the creation of such a structure because it is in the future of our nations, said Mr Morgan.
The Council of Ministers approved the president's call Seychelles and in the statement of its decisions it is stated that the IOC "shares the concerns of the Government of Seychelles on the importance of the fight against drug trafficking and regional mandates the General Secretariat of the IOC to make the necessary contacts with Member States and specialized bodies for combating international drug trafficking to prepare an action plan on the matter. "
Previously the head of the Seychelles diplomacy had thanked the IOC and its Secretary General, Jean Claude L'Estrac, their presence in the presidential elections last December.
He expressed the commitment of the Seychelles government to continue to work towards an IOC "even stronger and more united."
He also spoke of climate change against which it held that the protection and sustainable development of marine resources and coastal areas are important.
"Our shared ocean space gives us the opportunity to better structure our development while building climate resilience. The 2nd Summit of the Blue Economy on 19 January in Abu Dhabi, which is the first major international conference after the COP 21 in Paris, allowed us to discuss the modalities and implementation of financing mechanisms for developing countries. Minister Morgan has also dwelt on issues of peace, stability, security and the fight against maritime piracy. He emphasized the need to increase efforts to implement major projects open in the fields of air and maritime connectivity, food security, renewable energy, tourism, culture, domestic trade, etc. .
He expressed the Seychelles promise to the Operational Coordination Centre that the country is preparing to host enun "center of excellence". It is the same of the Seychelles presidency of the Contact Group on Piracy off the coast of Somalia, in which he pledged to honor the region.
Note that the delegation led by the Minister Morgan this 31 th Council of Ministers of the IOC includes Callixte d'Offay Ambassador, Diplomatic Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Kenneth Racombo CEO and OPL, and Nan Constant Senior economist, both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Transport. |
