ISPC gives gala dinner proceeds to STA

The Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) has received a cheque for R150,000 from the ISPC – a one-stop shopping for chefs, sommeliers, maîtres d'hôtel and food lovers.
STA principal Flavien Joubert received the cheque from ISPC chief executive Alfred Fourcroy earlier this week at the National Cultural Centre in the presence of Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St Ange, tourism principal secretary Anne Lafortune, STA’s general manager Peter Moncherry and representatives of Cable & Wireless and Air Seychelles.
The money was raised during a gala dinner held recently as part of the Seychelles national culinary contest where the winners prepared their dishes for distinguished guests.
For the past six years the ISPC has been organising the cooking competition for Seychellois chefs who must display their culinary theory and practical abilities to a panel of judges, including Michelin chef Lionel Rigolet from Belgium.
From the 60 chefs who entered the competition, only 15 made in to the finals – five in each of the three categories: starter, main course and desert.
The winner of the three categories receive prizes from Air Seychelles, Constance Hotels, and also Cable & Wireless as an all-expense paid trip (plane ticket, hotel and cash).
Mr Joubert said that the funds raised from this dinner will be used for renovation work, for students who are in need and also as incentives for students who work.
“It is a policy of mine that when my students work at an event, they get paid. We don’t want the students to be working for free so instead of using government funding we use the money we have saved for such endeavours,” said Mr Joubert.
Mr Fourcroy said the next culinary competition finals have been slated for November 4-6 at the renovated STA at La Misère and the preliminary contests will take place at the end of September.
