The Seychelles became a republic on the 29th June 1976.
It has a National Assembly of 34 members; 25 are elected.
Seychelles has a multi-party system.
The latest United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) development report ranks Seychelles among the top 52 nations worldwide in terms of its economic achievements measured in the wider sense ranging from welfare and social considerations to those of economic growth and viability.
Similarly, the World Investment Report (1997) ranks Seychelles among the top twenty African countries attracting foreign direct investment.
