It has been quite a tough year for Fifa (Fédération internationale de football association) but almost no one speaks of the developments that have happened in many countries as a direct result of football.

It has been quite a tough year for Fifa (Fédération internationale de football association) but almost no one speaks of the developments that have happened in many countries as a direct result of football.

Mr BlatterFifa president Joseph ‘Sepp’ Blatter said this in an interview with the local media yesterday morning at the Pointe Larue International Airport on his arrival. Accompanied by his wife, Mr Blatter will be here on holiday until January 4, 2012.
Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vincent Meriton, Seychelles Football Federation chairman Suketu Patel and vice-chairman Roch Henriette welcomed Mr Blatter, who is on his second visit here – 10 years after his inaugural trip in 2001 when Seychelles hosted the African under-17 championship.
In his 36th year with Fifa, Blatter, who was first elected president of the international football body on June 8, 1998, succeeding Dr João Havelange of Brazil as the eighth Fifa boss, said football is his life.
“Football is my life,” said Mr Blatter. “It connects people. It brings emotions and brings hope that tomorrow will be better.”
To illustrate the idea of hope, the Fifa supremo gave the example of Iraq where league football was played even when there was civil war in the country and the Iraqi national team, despite not being able to play at home, winning the Asian championship four years ago by beating Saudi Arabia in the final.
He also talked about Libya qualifying for next year’s African Nations Cup despite the war situation in the country and having to play all their matches away from home.
Asked how he has been able to cope with the allegations of corruption just before his re-election as Fifa president in June, and the racism problems in the English Premier League, Mr Blatter replied: “Football is no longer just a game. It has become part of society with more than 300 million people involved directly or indirectly.
“It is therefore not easy to handle all the people. You can control people on the field because there are boundaries, officials in charge, time limit and rules to guide the game. It’s difficult to control people who aren’t on the field. And whatever they do wrong, people say it’s Fifa that is responsible.
“Many people also forget the kind of development Fifa has helped brought about. They only speak about bribery, lack of transparency and a lot more. But these things exist in any society.”
IN A LIGHTER MOOD … Mr Blatter with Messrs Meriton, Patel and Henriette
Mr Blatter added: “Speaking of transparency, I’m happy to be here with my good friend Mr Patel who, during the 1999 congress in Los Angeles (USA), proposed that Fifa uses the international financing standard to present its financial statement and this is just what we have been doing since. When I took over as Fifa president, the organisation had a US $11 million deficit and today, it has reserves of US $1.2 billion. It’s quite something we have achieved, but people don’t speak about. It is with this money that Fifa runs its different programmes – Football for Health and Football for Hope.”
The Fifa president admits that 2011 has been a tough year but at the same time it has helped him realise his popularity among the Fifa members.
“Yes, it (2011) has been a very tough year, but a good year too for me. When many said I should not be re-elected Fifa president in June, I won 186 of the 203 votes cast and this represents 92% of the votes. By giving me another mandate, it shows that the people have trust and confidence in me and want me to help football develop and play an important part in society,” added the 75-year-old.
On the issue of goal-line technology to help officials in their duties and reduce high-profile incidents, Mr Blatter said Fifa has been doing tests for the past three years.
“We cannot afford to see the same mistake like at the last World Cup in South Africa when except the officials everyone saw that the ball had crossed the goal-line by almost a metre during the England – Germany clash which the former lost. This is not good for football. We have decided that if there is a goal-line technology which is accurate, affordable and not too complicated, let’s have it. The final decision will be taken by the International Football Association Board,” he said.
Mr Blatter noted that the fans decide what is football and introducing camera will stop the spontaneity of the game.
“In 125 years the laws of the game have practically not changed and everyone, including children, knows the basic rules of the game,” he added.
The Swiss said he is happy to learn that Seychelles has made good use of the four Goal Projects financed by Fifa and the joy the Seychelles team brought the nation on winning the gold medal at the 8th Indian Ocean Island Games.

EU pays €5.6m for tuna fishing in Seychelles in 2011 - 29.12.2011

Seychelles has received the 2011 contribution from the European Union (EU) worth 5,600,000 euros as part of the Fishery Partnership Agreement, which allows European purse seiners to operate in our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

It is the first of three such payments under the existing  three-year fisheries accord.Transhipment of tuna in Port Victoria provides employment for stevedores
The allocation is made up of the access right – 3,380,000 euros – which allows the EU’s fleet in the Indian Ocean to fish in Seychelles waters.
Another sum of 2,220,000 euros is allocated to support and implement Seychelles’ sectoral fisheries and maritime policy.
The Fishery Partnership Agreement prevents EU vessels to operate in areas reserved for Seychellois artisanal fishermen.
It stipulates that the total EU catches in Seychelles’ waters, by 21 purse seiners, shall not exceed 52,000 tonnes.
If there is additional catch, a further contribution shall be paid by the EU.
The EU fleet plays a crucial role in supplying all the Western Indian Ocean tuna processing factories, whose exports to Europe are exempt of tax.
The Indian Ocean Tuna (IOT) cannery is one of the world’s largest and receives all its tuna from EU vessels.
An additional benefit is the transhipment of tuna in Port Victoria by the purse seiners, which also provides employment for stevedores.

As the last batch of retirees for this year, a group of nine retiring teachers from Mahe and Praslin – of whom eight were present – were greeted by VP Faure, the principal secretary for education Merida Delcy, principal secretary in the VP’s office Jeanne Siméon, and the principal secretary for administration Jessy Esparon.
Mr Faure said the occasion was an auspicious one and welcomed them on behalf of President Michel.
“This is a touching moment for all of us and from the bottom of our hearts we profoundly thank you for all your years of service,” he said.

The retiring teachers are Marie-Madeleine Rideau, Jeanne Etienne, Marie-Ange Hoareau, Gilette Lespoir, Florette Marie, Wilna Rosine, Aziz Sylla, Erika Wirtz and Rose de May Ernesta.
Each teacher then spoke briefly about their career and some of their best moments in their profession. Some recounted how their students came to meet them at the school gates every morning and carried their bags.
Others spoke fondly of how much they enjoyed meeting past students and catching up with them.
The teachers thanked the department of education for its support over the years and also had some words of encouragement for the youths – especially young teachers – encouraging them to persevere in the hope that they might last as long as they did in the profession or even stay longer.
Mrs Lespoir holds the record for the longest-serving teacher, notching up 46 years of service.
A second group of three retirees was also present at State House on Tuesday. It included Wilby Ernesta and Rocksen Cesar from the Seychelles Ports Authority who are also retiring as senior tug master and head coxwain respectively, and Francis Ally from the Family Tribunal.
VP Faure and his delegation, which included Seychelles Ports Authority chief executive André Ciseau and the principal secretary for social development Linda William-Melanie, welcomed this second group.
Mr Ally worked as senior enforcement officer with the Family Tribunal and his retirement will take effect on January next year.
Each of the three spoke warmly of their love for their jobs, which they said had helped them make it through the years. They also had words of encouragement and told those they are leaving behind in the world of work not to give up when the going gets tough.
VP Faure also presented a token of appreciation to each of the retirees.

Community of Nations invited to echo message of solidarity against piracy at March carnival in Seychelles

Community of Nations invited to echo message of solidarity against piracy at March carnival in Seychelles(Forimmediaterelease.net) Navies from the Community of Nations are being invited to be in Seychelles from March 2-4, 2012 to echo a message of solidarity against the continued presence of Somali pirates off the coast of Africa and the Gulf countries.

The invitation is for Navy ships from the Community of Nations to again be present at the carnival in Seychelles and to parade together in the carnival procession as was done this year.

“It is a different way to send a message of unity against the piracy epidemic, but what a better way to send a message than to be seen as Navies from a United Community of Nation when the biggest contingent of world press will be present in Seychelles,” Alain St.Ange, CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board said.

At the 2011 carnival in Seychelles, the Navies from Russia, India, France, and Seychelles marched together in the carnival procession behind carnival delegations from the best and most-known carnivals such as those from Brazil, Notting Hill of the UK, Trinidad&Tobago, and Italy, as well as cultural groups from the rest of the world. The British Navy had also arrived in Seychelles to show its solidarity but was called to duty at sea and had to leave Port Victoria on Carnival Day.

IDC hosts lunch for elderly residents of Plaisance home - 29.12.2011

Residents of the Plaisance home for the elderly yesterday enjoyed lunch and received gifts from the Islands Development Company (IDC).

The elderly enjoying lunch yesterday
Plaisance elderly home administrator Danny Laporte thanked the IDC and added that although the residents are not in very good health, this does not prevent them from enjoying themselves during such activities.
IDC’s public relations and communications manager Thelma Pool said it was a pleasure for her company to share the lunch with the residents and present them with gifts.
“We are aware that as a company we have a responsibility towards the society,” said Ms Pool.
This is the first time the IDC has hosted lunch for residents of the Plaisance home for the elderly and it hopes to adopt this place in the future, she added.
The gifts comprised wine, desserts, biscuits, juice, cakes and ice-creams.
The event started with a blessing by Anglican priest, Father Peter Rath.
Miss Pool said the IDC wanted to bring cheer to the elderly people at the Plaisance home and let them know they are not alone.
“We have done it out of love for these people,” she added.
“The IDC organised the lunch in recognition of the elderly people at the Plaisance home as it feels the need to do more for the Plaisance community – its assigned area during the ‘Clean up the world’ campaign.”

Present at the hand-over ceremony was the manager for imports and distribution at the IDC Anand Kumar, public relations and communications manager Thelma Pool, store supervisor Nathalie Edmond, sisters of Charity and residents of the foyer.
Ms Pool said since residents of the Missionary of Charity were among the first the IDC brought to visit Silhouette, they thought it would be a nice gesture during the festive season to help the home out with whatever they might need.
“We asked the sisters what the residents need and we were told soaps, disinfectants for bathrooms and kitchen and foodstuffs like milk, juices and biscuits,” she said.
Ms Pool said the gesture is part of “IDC’s corporate social responsibility to give back to the community”.

Seychelles eagerly awaits its 2012 Sunyang Eco-healing Seychelles Marathon

Seychelles eagerly awaits its 2012 Sunyang Eco-healing Seychelles Marathon

Seychelles eagerly awaits its 2012 Sunyang Eco-healing Seychelles Marathon(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Seychelles islands are set to host its annual Sunyang Eco-Healing Seychelles Marathon for the year 2012, which will take place on February 26.

The Sunyang Eco-Healing Seychelles Marathon took place for the first time in 2008, with a modest count of 330 participants. It was initiated by Mr. Dong Chang Jeong, Seychelles Honorary Consul General for South Korea, who is also head of the Seychelles Tourist Office in Korea. The event was conceived to contribute to Seychellois’ health and to unify Seychellois and visitors.

The marathon indeed helps to bring Seychelles to the attention of more travelers and contributes to lifting the Seychelles brand around the world.
For the 5th edition, the islands can expect to receive some 300 overseas participants, on top of several hundred local participants.

On Sunday, February 26, runners of the 5th edition of the Sunyang Eco-Healing Seychelles Marathon will set off from Beau Vallon at 7:00 am, covering the Northern and North Western areas of the main island of Mahe, as well as its capital, Victoria.

As for the structure of the marathon, there is something for a wide range of fitness levels.

This follows the philosophy of the Sunyang Eco-Healing Seychelles Marathon that is to spread the focus beyond mere competition, putting equal emphasis on appreciating exercise and being surrounded by the natural beauty of Seychelles.
Medals and prizes of a range of values are to be awarded to the top five category winners, and all participants who complete the race shall be awarded a tee-shirt in addition to their Official Time Certificate.

The Sunyang Eco-Healing Seychelles Marathon is recognized internationally through the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) label. It is organized jointly by the National Sports Council and the Seychelles Tourism Board.

The deadline for entry is January 31 for overseas participants and February 15 for local participants. Entries from outside Seychelles must be emailed to sey@seychellestour.co.kr or highlevelsports@seychelles.sc . Seychelles giant land tortoise donated to British zoo arrives in the UK

Seychelles giant land tortoise donated to British zoo arrives in the UK

Seychelles giant land tortoise donated to British zoo arrives in the UK(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Seychelles government has donated a giant Aldabra tortoise to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens in UK, as part of newly-established conservation links between the islands’ National Botanical Gardens and the Cotswold Wildlife Park.

The bred male tortoise, named Darwin, after the famous Charles Darwin who was one of the first people to propose that the Aldabra atoll in Seychelles remained protected, arrived in UK in the early hours of last Friday morning.

It was the Seychelles’ Tourism Ambassador in the UK, Georgia Dunlop, who initiated an exchange of this nature with the Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire, and her initiative was fully backed by the islands’ Ministry of Environment and Seychelles Tourism Board. It took Georgia Dunlop and other partners working on the project in both countries, three months to finalize the transfer of 25-year-old Darwin from the Seychelles to the UK, and after the landing of the giant tortoise in the UK, Georgia Dunlop said she was happy that the partnership between the Botanical Gardens and the Cotswold Wildlife Park has kicked off on such a good note.

“It is my dream come true to see Darwin finally arrived at the Cotswold Park, and to everyone, he will always symbolize the beginning of this fabulous friendship and partnership between the Botanical Gardens of the Seychelles and Cotswold Wildlife Park of the UK,” Georgia Dunlop said.

Darwin becomes the fourth Seychelles Aldabra tortoise at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, but the first to be officially donated by the government of Seychelles to the park. It is to be noted that the giant land tortoise is endemic to the Seychelles and is listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Mrs. Dunlop, who visited Darwin in his new home this morning, together with the Seychelles Tourism Board’s PR Manager in the UK, Lena Hoareau, explained that the Seychelles Botanical Gardens and Cotswold Wildlife Park of the UK will now agree on a range of exchanges for research purposes.

“I received the help of a lot of people on this project, and there was such an enthusiasm throughout. It shows that both sides place great importance on conservation and there is always that readiness to do more and to learn more,” she said.

Mrs. Dunlop also spoke of the publicity that such an achievement is expected to bring for her home islands of the Seychelles, saying it would create more awareness on the destination and hopefully encourage more visitors from UK to visit the tourist paradise islands of the Seychelles.

Mrs. Dunlop was met upon arrival at the Cotswold Wildlife Park this morning by excited staff members, led by the zoo’s owner, Reggie Heyworth.

“He is just beautiful, and I can’t thank the government of Seychelles enough for this wonderful donation,” said Mr. Heyworth of the tortoise, saying he was amazed by his size and beauty. The Seychelles giant tortoise, Darwin, weighs 143 kg and is set to become the star attraction of the giant tortoise collection at the zoo.

“I’m sure Darwin will be a big attraction here, and we will make sure he feels at home amongst us,” Mr. Heyworth added.

Louise Peat, Registrar at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, said that compared to Darwin, they did not have a lot of background information on the other three Aldabra tortoises. One was donated to them over 20 years ago by a private individual, whereas the other two were offered to them by Customs some years ago after a confiscation exercise.

Ms. Peat said she felt privileged to have worked closely with Mrs. Dunlop on this project and she was excited that the Seychelles giant tortoise, Darwin, is now one of their zoological collections. He adds to the beauty and diversity of the species at the park, she noted.

Darwin will now undergo an observation process until he fully settles in his new environment.

It is good to note that Darwin’s trip is also symbolic in that he traveled on one of Air Seychelles’ last flights to UK, as the airline is ceasing all services to Europe in January.

An official handing-over ceremony of the Seychelles giant tortoise to the Cotswold Park of the UK will take place in February.

The Region Initiative based in Pakistan supports efforts of the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP)

The Region Initiative based in Pakistan supports efforts of the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP)

The Region Initiative based in Pakistan supports efforts of the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP)(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Region Initiative (TRI) is a tri-regional umbrella of tourism-related organizations, which functions as a link between three regions - South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. It offers blended tours packages, consultancy, networking of tourism organizations, tourism research opportunities, marketing of small tourism stakeholders, promotion of need of usage of renewable energies, and advocates sustainable tourism and ecotourism.

TRI believes that tourism is one of the most effective tools for peace that can be achieved through tourism, and tourism should be considered not only a revenue provider but a harmony and peace generator and should, therefore, be supported by United Nations bodies as a peace industry.

TRI believes that the agendas of governments are sometimes contrary to the needs and demands of the tourism industry. In South Asia, governments of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan have different political and diplomatic conflicts, and this is the lead reason that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has failed to establish interaction and strong networking in the field of tourism. There are also certain conflicts among Central Asian republics and also in Eastern Europe countries. Therefore, the chance of a solid networking and connection among tourism ministries of these countries is more myth than reality.

The Region Initiative stresses that governments should provide direct financial support to those who are following a path of sustainable tourism instead of harming nature by adopting mass and uncontrolled tourism in fragile environments of Central Asia, South Asia and Eastern Europe. TRI demands that governments should provide financial support of small stakeholders for creating balance, otherwise it would become difficult for small stakeholders to get their share of tourism revenue and difficult for those who are trying to following the path of sustainable tourism.

In May 2010, regional intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, tour operators, and other tourism industry stakeholders of South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe were invited to institute a stronger and closer relationship. Armenia, Bangladesh, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, Tajikistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan joined hands and has established a strong base for cost effective tours, sharing information and knowledge, and obtaining benefits from the strength of its members. The idea behind this networking and collaboration is the promotion of the small stakeholder of the tourism industry, including accommodation providers, tour operators, tourist guides, and communities providing community-based tourism.

TRI’s President, Agha Iqrar Haroon, said: “Today, world peace is victim of conflicts ranging from geographical to conceptual and from political to religious. The agonies of humans are growing on multidimensional levels, and are one of the core reasons for financial, political, and social unrest – there is a lack of ‘oneness’ and an absence of ‘interfaith harmony’ among societies. TRI is pleased to work with ICTP to achieve peace through tourism.”

Achieving harmony among races, cultures, continents, and religions is a major issue for individuals and groups that feel pain for millions of poor, powerless, homeless, and hopeless people around the world. Meeting each other and living together for some time helps to understand each other, and tourism has always been an important tool for such meetings. Tourism has long worked as a modality for bringing harmony among people, and exposure of the East to the West historically became possible through tourists.

President Haroon added: “TRI attempts to bring about peace, harmony, tolerance, and oneness through The Region Initiative. It will not only develop and promote tourism in the region, but it will also attempt to achieve more harmony and peace in the region. This region is very diversified, not only in races but also in beliefs from Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Agnosticism, and Atheism. Bridging South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe is the perfect attempt of achieving oneness and peace.”

Blending and connecting tour operators and tourism bodies to offer tours year round is also an objective of TRI. Eastern European tour operators can offer tours to their clients to India, Nepal, and Pakistan when extreme weather makes people shy about traveling to Eastern Europe. Companies of Nepal and India can offer tourism to Eastern Europe or Central Asia when temperatures go as high as 52c in many parts of this sun continent. Tourism stakeholders can enjoy good business year round if they have better reach and networking in other regions. Extreme weather conditions that occur during the winter and summer, along with extreme monsoons, can only be experienced in these three regions of the world. Therefore, these regions having an extreme diversification in fauna, flora, topography, culture, customs, and social fabric and yet are strongly connected through history and cultural roots.

The International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) Chairman Juergen T. Steinmetz said: “We are pleased to work with The Region Initiative to ICTP, and we are looking forward to working with them to further expand the reach of our mission.”

Plans to stop trade in streets

People who are running businesses on roads meant for vehicles or pedestrians are being urged to relocate to appropriate places.
Technical adviser in the Land Transport department, Patrick Andre, said yesterday that theVendors selling their wares along Market Street yesterday. They are being asked to use appropriate outlets so as to leave streets clear for vehicles and pedestrians authorities have decided to make the roads free of traders early next year, and have asked the business operators to use areas like the market building or its extension.
“They are blocking traffic and obstructing the free flow of people while competing with licensed businesses in the area yet some of them have not even been licensed,” he said.
He said while all streets should be free of traders, steps to clear them will begin with Market, Benezet and Church streets.
The chief executive of the Seychelles Agricultural Agency Antoine Moustache invited those selling fruits, vegetables and local craft in the streets to contact the market manageress to allocate them some of the 30 available spaces in the market.
“They should take the opportunity to do so now because it is more secure and they need to pay only R20 per table per day.
He said there are about 20 people selling fruit and vegetables in the streets so there is enough room for them.

The Seychelles President's touching Christmas message

The Seychelles President's touching Christmas message

The Seychelles President's touching Christmas message(Forimmediaterelease.net) The spirit of Christmas at this time of the year warms our hearts. It brings renewed hope and happiness to all of us, as we gather to celebrate a long tradition, a way of life, that has given us the spiritual values that guide our lives today.

We have lived a momentous year in 2011, marked by the greatest show of unity and solidarity among our nation. The unity and solidarity enabled us to score many victories, to the joy and happiness of all our people.

Christmas is foremost a religious event. We should always remember the spiritual essence of the celebration, and its true meaning in the lives of millions of people around the world. My family and I pray that this Christmas we continue to hold hands, to forever remain a nation of love, hope, unity and sharing. We think of the children who are not with their parents. Our thoughts are with the sick in hospitals, the disabled, and the families who are facing difficulties.

During the time approaching Christmas, lives in many homes have been shattered by tragic events. As we make our way to church and gatherings, let us say a little prayer for our two brave Seychellois who have been forcefully taken away from us to be held as hostages by pirates in a far-away and inhospitable land. We pray for the day when we will welcome them back home.

We remember the pain of the families who lost loved ones in accidents, fires, and at sea. May this Christmas be a modest, joyful, and safe celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Our solidarity is also with the many individuals and families who have to make the transition to new opportunities, as the country adapts to the changing world environment.

Christmas unites all of us. That is why it is a time of family reunion, love, renewal of friendship, and peace everywhere.

My family and I thank all persons, groups, and organizations who make the extra effort to spread the spirit of Christmas throughout our land, especially to the children in special homes, the elderly, and the sick. We are grateful to the choirs for the carols, and the businesses for the decorations.

We wish all Seychellois everywhere, residents and visitors, a wonderful Christmas. May God continue to protect us during this festive season.MEDIA CONTACT: Alain St.Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, Email: alain.s@seychelles.com

International tourism strategist and author takes center stage in Asia tourism inspiration

International tourism strategist and author takes center stage in Asia tourism inspiration

International tourism strategist and author takes center stage in Asia tourism inspiration(Forimmediaterelease.net) As the world continues to work through one of the most paralyzing periods of economic crisis, one economic sector is actually gaining wide-scale appreciation for its ability to generate employment, revenues, and investment and unity: the global tourism sector. Fueling growth of the sector is the growing hunger for travel within, and to, the BRICS nations (Brasil, Russia, China, India, South Africa).

India, one of the world’s largest out-bound travel nations and most exciting inbound destinations, continues to fuel worldwide travel activity. Under this premise, and with the poignant theme, “Addressing Change – Rebrand, Reposition, Reinvent,” the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) held its annual convention in Macao, China, from November 22-25, 2011. The convention was a calling together of over 1,200 of India’s travel business leaders and agency owners from Air India and Kingfisher Airlines to Nomad Tours and Cox and Kings. With an agenda focused on essential strategies and tools for business growth, including the role of the agent, business development strategies and partnerships, adoption of technology, evolving media, and CRM, the 2011 TAFI Convention was undoubtedly one of India’s most important travel conventions of 2011.

To set the scene of the conference, and the current global reality of the sector, international tourism strategist and author, Anita Mendiratta, was invited to deliver the keynote address. Based in South Africa, another of the BRICS nations and host of the 2012 TAFI Convention, Mendiratta has become a leading voice of the invaluable impact of the tourism industry on nations, building national identity, socio-economic stability, and competitiveness. This message was passed on, clearly, in her TAFI keynote address.

As stated by Ajay Prakash, President of TAFI, “Anita’s hallmark is her extraordinary ability to connect abstruse concepts with immediate everyday human reality. Emphasizing, and re-emphasizing, the inevitability of change - the fact that it comes whether you want it or not, whether you are ready for it or not, or whether you’re happy about it or not, and that it happens in a split second - she very aptly illustrated by her references to the royal engagement in the UK, the Rugby World Cup win by New Zealand, the earthquake in Japan, and the Arab spring – each one of these events transformed those involved and even those who were mere spectators, immediately rebranding and repositioning the players.

“Over and above successfully aligning the minds of the 1,000+ delegates, Mendiratta successfully aligned their sense of confidence in, and passion for, the industry. Prakash continued: “The most important thing that Anita said during her address was ‘In addition to rebranding, repositioning and reinventing, you also need to reinspire – bring the joy back into what you do.’ Which is exactly what she does – her passion for the business of tourism is truly inspiring.”

Seychelles to receive musical instruments from Henan province in China

Seychelles to receive musical instruments from Henan province in China(Forimmediaterelease.net) During a donation ceremony held last week at the prestigious Pangu 7-star hotel, Seychelles Ambassador to China, Mr. Philippe Le Gall, and the representatives of two major companies from Henan province, Jianye Group and Zhengzhou Synear Food Co., Ltd., signed a donation agreement for a total amount of RMB300,000 (US$47,000) to acquire musical instruments for Seychelles National Conservatoire of Performing Arts.

The decision to provide this assistance was taken during the visit of the Vice-Governor of Henan Province, Mr. Shi Jichun, in September, and followed discussions between the Minister for Social Development and Culture, Mr. Bernard Shamlaye, and Henan’s Vice Governor, Mrs. Kong, during Minister Shamlaye’s visit to Henan province last year.

The donation was finalized between Seychelles’ Embassy, the Foreign Affairs Office of Henan province, and the two donating Henan-based companies on December 13, and according to Amb. Le Gall, represents a successful and very promising example of triangular cooperation associating two government agencies and the private sector.

This ceremony formed part of the Embassy’s activities to celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations with China, and was attended by Mr. Wang Shiting, the Counselor of the Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Guo Junfeng, Deputy Director General of the Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs office of the People’s Government of Henan province, as well as many Chinese friends of Seychelles.

Slovenia’s unique aviation adventure

Slovenia’s unique aviation adventure

Slovenia’s unique aviation adventure(Forimmediaterelease.net) From Slovenia, a Central European country at the juncture of the Alps and the Mediterranean, on January 3, 2012, the Virus SW ultra-light plane will set out on a two-month journey around the world. Weighing merely 290 kilos, this plane, which uses a minimum amount of fuel, was constructed by the Slovenian manufacturer, Pipistrel, a recurrent winner of the NASA award for top energy-efficient planes.

This grand and environmentally-friendly project is also supported by the Slovenian Tourist Board, which invites you to accompany Slovenian pilot Matevž Lenarčič on his journey around the world. The pilot will regularly post his impressions about the journey at www.worldgreenflight.com .

NEW STORY: On the way around the world
In the early days of 2012, Matevž Lenarcic, a biologist, environmentalist, and photographer-pilot will again set course in his small aircraft for a lonely flight around the world, this time in a westerly direction. The tiny ultra light Virus-SW914, made by the worldwide renowned company, Pipistrel, weighs only 290 kg (640 lbs.) and is the fastest aircraft in the world in its category, using less fuel per distance flown. Its abilities have been proven in two NASA-sponsored competitions in the USA, where for 2 consecutive years the aircraft received prestigious awards for its exceptional flight characteristics. The aircraft is produced under the Pipistrel brand Ecolution www.pipistrel.si/top-quality/ecolution-our-philosophy, meaning 100 percent autonomous energy production with optimized, computer-controlled acquisition of green energy (solar, air, and geothermal).

NEW MISSION: Look at the images - feel the planet
Flying around the world in a small airplane has a profound meaning. Low and slow over the surface, with a notion of the planet revolving beneath the wings, but fast enough to discover its secrets. These secrets will be stored in digital memory cards and then communicated to the people of our planet, so they will also get a feel for their world. Only people with a sense of the world are able to protect it. More than 70 percent of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Due to different physical states, different quality and distribution, almost a third of the human population has limited or even blocked access to safe drinking sources. We can all change that. Images will show places with plenty of clean drinking water and places without a single drop. We are going to show very different faces of water and warn the world that lack of water brings even more tension to the society than oil trade.

NEW CHALLENGE: In the eco-friendly light aircraft
GreenLight WorldFlight faces Pipistrel and the pilot with a number of challenges. The aircraft must safely operate when flying at very high or low polar temperatures and extreme altitudes. In addition, the fuel consumption must remain at very low levels, as some stages are over 4000 km long, and the amount of fuel on board of such a small aircraft is very limited. Only by an ideal combination of weight, drag, and lift, the required results can be achieved. The aim is to fly over 80,000 km (twice the length of Earth’s circumference) around the world in with a minimal use of 95 octane unleaded fuel. Besides high speeds close to 300 km/h (160 kts), the aircraft must remain stable at very low speeds below 80 km/h (43 kts). So far, this is the only aircraft with such capabilities, so Pipistrel sets new standards in environmentally-friendly and utility flying.

NEW RESEARCH
We will demonstrate that a lightweight aircraft can provide valuable information on the black carbon - BC - and light absorbing carbonaceous aerosols - LACA - concentrations, their regional heterogeneity, and vertical profiles, with a minor payload and for a fraction of the cost associated with large airborne platforms. We will modify the aircraft to include an aerosol inlet and use an Aethalometer to measure aerosol optical properties at different wavelengths. The wavelength dependence of absorption will enable us to attempt to apportion the BC concentrations to two major sources: biomass and fossil fuel combustion. Measurements will be performed throughout the flight and will include regions, where no or very little measurements have taken place, such as Antarctica, Africa, and over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

ATTEMPTS TO:
- Fly the lightest 3-axis aircraft (290 kg/640 lb.) around the World
- Burn the smallest amount of fuel per distance flown
- Fly world speed records
- Make the nicest book about World Waters

ROUTE: Over more than 50 countries
Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Brazil, French Guiana, Surinam, Guiana, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Mexico, Guatemala, Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Antarctic, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Seychelles, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Niger, Libya, Tunisia

PILOT
Matevž Lenarcic (1959, Slovenia) has graduated in biology. An alpinist, paraglider, environmentalist, photographer, and a pilot, he has climbed all over the world and, among others, reached the top of 8,051m Broad Peak in the Himalayas and climbed extreme routes in Patagonia. He is the author of 11 books (nature, photography, climbing and flying), some of them awarded and translated in several languages. He is also founder and director of Aerovizija d.o.o., company for aerial photography. www.aerovizija.com Matevž Lenarcic is experienced long distance flier. Besides “normal” flying in Europe, mostly for aerial business purposes (vertical and oblique photography), he has also some extreme flights under his belt:

- Worldtrannsiberia 2002: 28,000 km over 8 countries including Russia
- Around The Only World 2004: 38,000 km crossing 23 countries
- Africa - Valley of Life 2005: 17,000 km over 13 countries
- The Alps - A Bird’s Eye View 2006 - 2009: 60,000 km all over the Alps

He has flown for more than 3,000 hours all over the world, mostly with his ultra-light motor glider and other single engine aircrafts. He holds a PPL - private pilot license - with IFR - instrumental flight rules - rating, night qualification, and an ULPL - ultralight pilot license.

He holds the following records: Official national speed record Around the World Eastbound - C1a, An official world speed record Around the World Eastbound - C1a, 2nd place national competition RAL2 2005, and has won aviation awards and prizes from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) in; Bronze colibry, Silver colibry, Diamond colibry, and Circumnavigator East Diamond.MEDIA CONTACT: Lucija Jager, Project Manager, Global Public Relations, Slovenian Tourist Board, Dimičeva ulica 13, SI - 1000 Ljubljana, Phone: +386 1 589 85 78, +386 1 589 85 60, Email; lucija.jager@slovenia.info

Carnival International de Victoria Seychelles 2012 is not to be missed

Carnival International de Victoria Seychelles 2012 is not to be missed

Carnival International de Victoria Seychelles 2012 is not to be missed(Forimmediaterelease.net) Seychelles and La Reunion islands are busy planning for the 2nd edition of the “Carnaval International de Victoria," due to take place between March 2-4, 2012 and comprising 3 days of festivities that promise, once again, to make Victoria the place to be.

In the 2012 edition, Emirates Airline will be the carnival’s official airline partner, while in the true spirit of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands, La Reunion will be Seychelles’ partner in hosting the 2nd edition of the carnival that has already attracted some 35 foreign delegations and floats.

The official countdown ceremony of the 2012 “Carnaval International de Victoria" will take place on January 13 at the International Conference Center of Seychelles (ICCS) in Victoria when the full program, list of invitees, and performing artists will be rolled out.

Once again, the carnival will kick off with an official opening in central Victoria, attended by both international and local dignitaries, as well as Seychellois from the tourism trade and a cross-section of local businesses. Live music performances, entertainment from home and abroad, and a wide choice of international food stalls will be the order of the day against a backdrop of bright lights, colorful decorations, and levels of excitement appropriate for the carnival of carnivals.

Day two will be the carnival procession day when all local and foreign participants will join in a spectacular carnival procession through the streets of the capital amid huge numbers of locals, visitors, and crews from visiting navies, together echoing the carnival theme, “the melting pot of cultures."

This carnival procession remains the unique attribute of the “Carnaval International de Victoria" in the Seychelles. This is the carnival where the best carnivals of the world and the most known ones walk side by side in a carnival procession. They are followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations from the four corners of the world.

The third and final day will be one of pure family fun as local hotels and caterers make their culinary specialities available to the public while live bands, both local and international, play into the night. This is a great day for everyone to interact, as it brings the philosophy behind the carnival to life.

The second “Carnaval International de Victoria" looks set to attract a far greater and more diverse participation than the highly successful, first edition and is looking at bringing in some very popular international artists for its 2nd edition, as well as a star-studded list of foreign dignitaries and invitees.

So, come and be part of it all and experience the carnival of carnivals – definitely the place to be between March 2-4, 2012 is in the Seychelles!MEDIA CONTACT: Alain St.Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, Email: alain.s@seychelles.com

He noted that the President’s Award Programme is well suited to instil such values in the youths.

Progress in PUC’s plans to boost water supply

Progress in PUC’s plans to boost water supply - 21.12.2011

Plans to raise the level of La Gogue dam so it can hold more water advanced this week when the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) invited firms wishing to do a feasibility study to indicate their interest.

This follows release of funds to do so by both the government and the African Development Bank, which is also willing to fund the project itself.
If feasible, work to raise the level of the La Gogue dam will start in 2013
Moves to raise the volume of water getting into the dam through a pipe coming from the Mount Simpson area are also advanced and the pipe should be ready to deliver a daily 2,500 tonnes of water into the dam by July next year.
The PUC’s chief executive Robert Stravens said this in an interview yesterday when he also told the media that all the desalination plants are not running now because there is enough fresh water from the dam and streams.
He nevertheless said there was recently a situation when desalination plants had to be run at Anse Boileau after flash rains caused intake pipe filters to clog.
A series of tanks being erected in different districts will help curb such problems, as consumers can be given stored water when filters are cleared.
The actual work to raise the dam will start in 2013 and be ready in 2017 if studies show the project is worthwhile.
One of the issues the study will look at is the level of seepage from the dam, which he said is normal of all dams, but noted raising the dam will increase pressure and raise the amount of water going into the ground.
He nevertheless said the water is not lost and the dam is in fact designed to allow some to percolate because there are users downstream who use the water.
The PUC also has plans to raise the capacity of the desalination plants, which in 2011 saw a boost enabling them to produce a daily 7,000 tonnes water.
“We have also awarded a tender to upgrade the desalination plants by another 12,000 tonnes which will bring us to 19,000 tonnes per day to allow us to bridge the gap as the other aspects of the overall project to raise the capacity,” he said.
Mr Stravens said the PUC is also intensifying efforts to replace leaking pipes through which a lot of water is lost.

Seychellois win prizes in Saudi Arabia competition for African countries

Seychellois win prizes in Saudi Arabia competition for African countries - 21.12.2011

Five Seychellois have won various awards -- from laptops to a trip to Mecca -- in the third edition of a competition organised by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Committee for Dawa in Africa.

The winners were presented with their rewards in a small ceremony held recently in the auditorium of UniSey’s School of Education (ex-NIE) at Mont Fleuri.

Interestingly, all the winners are members of the same Jean-Baptiste family. The first prize, which is a trip to perform Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca Saudi Arabia, was clinched by Antonio (Ali) Jean-Baptiste. The second and third prizes – both a laptop -- went to Shamsa Jean-Baptiste and Liana Jean-Baptiste respectively.
Unicy Barbara Laure also won a laptop as the fourth prize while Hanifa Jean-Baptiste took home an Electronic Quran as the fifth prize.
The prizes were presented by Brother Ibrahim Afif, the President of the Islamic Society of Seychelles; Justice Arun Karunakaran; Mohammed Afif, Secretary to the Cabinet; Petter Abdul Hadi Payet, President of the Islamic Foundation of Seychelles on Praslin and by the Imam of the Praslin Mosque, Brother Abu Anas Servina.
The competition was launched in June, with the support of the Dawa section of local organisation ICING as part of a global effort to encourage Muslims to increase their knowledge of Islam and to sensitise people in general on the importance of the Hajj pilgrimage. It is the first time since its launch that the competition is open to Muslims living in Seychelles.
This year’s competition consisted of 20 multiple choice questions based on the theme “The views of the Four Imams towards the Family and Companions of The Noble prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him).”
There was rousing interest among the small Muslim population on both Mahe and Praslin and initially over 50 expressed their interest to take part. But two months later, only 29 managed to successfully complete the questionnaires.

The winners’ papers were sent to the C.D.A’s office for the African countries, in Pretoria, South Africa for the final ranking of the winners, after initial corrections were carried out by the Dawah Team of ICING.
Most of the prizes awarded to the members of the Jean Baptiste family were collected by Antonio, who already performed the pilgrimage to Mecca last month.
The prize giving ceremony was marked by lectures delivered by the Imam of the Al Nahayan Mosque Victoria, Ibrahim Lebon and  Imam Muadh Valentin.
Another highlight of the activity was testimonies made by a few members of the audience who have performed Hajj.

The Rear Admiral’s talks at State House are part of coordination efforts to establish procedures for calls by warships of the Russian Federation to Port Victoria.
According to the Russian delegation, the agreement -- which is expected to be finalised this week -- provides favourable conditions for Russian warships to operate in the Indian Ocean as part of the international anti-piracy effort.
During the State House talks, it was noted that the Russian Federation is aware of the threat of piracy to the Seychelles and the agreement is to the mutual interest of both states. President Michel was of the same point of view.

Chamorro canoes on Guam Beach Park recall ancient past

Chamorro canoes on Guam Beach Park recall ancient past

Chamorro canoes on Guam Beach Park recall ancient past(Forimmediaterelease.net) TUMON, Guam - There’s no question that seeing history is a lot more fascinating than just reading it. For those interested in Chamorro history, a step on Guam’s Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Beach Park (Ypao) is like a step back in time. Since 2009, the park has been ground zero for the building of ancient Chamorro canoe replicas, as well as a massive Guma Latte, or canoe house. Though the house is still in progress, the finished product will be an impressive 42 feet wide and 80 feet long and feature ten 14-foot tall latte stones.

Ancient latte stones have long fascinated residents of the Mariana Islands. These megaliths served as the foundation stones of ancient structures: homes, outrigger canoe houses, and communal centers. They are also used as grave markers and are still widely believed to have an uncanny connection to the spirit realm.

As Ron Acfalle explains, the canoe house was always constructed before the canoe. Acfalle is the founder and president of TASA, Traditions Affirming our Seafaring Ancestry, Inc. He is nearly always present at the site, either working with volunteer students on canoe construction or talking to curious tourists about his labor of love.

Acfalle has 15 years of experience and is the contractor responsible for construction of an ancient Chamorro Village at Lina’la’ Chamorro Cultural Park in Tumon, Guam. The Gun Beach park is a favorite among tourists seeking a true cultural experience and a peek into Chamorro life 500 years ago.

TASA is a tax-exempt, non-profit, Chamorro cultural organization that encourages active participation in all matters pertaining to the people of the Sinahi archipelago, the Northern Marianas. Acfalle’s vision is for the Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Beach Park (Ypao) site to host a wealth of cultural structures and activities, from the Guma Latte (canoe house) to traditional Chamorro dancing to canoe “taxis” that ferry visitors across Tumon Bay.

The Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnival, held annually in Seychelles, is gathering momentum

The Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnival, held annually in Seychelles, is gathering momentum(Forimmediaterelease.net) It is reported from the islands of the Seychelles and La Reunion that arrangements for their March 2012 carnival is gathering momentum. More press than ever before seen in the Indian Ocean region have confirmed that they will visit the Vanilla Islands to cover the 2012 carnival, which will this time around be jointly hosted by the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) and the IRT (Ile Reunion Tourisme).

Marymonde Matatiken, who heads the Celebrate Seychelles Events Department, has confirmed the unbelievable numbers of various world press who will be arriving in the Seychelles with options of visiting the carnival co-host, the island of La Reunion, that lies but some two hours from Seychelles. Pascal Viroleau, the Head of La Reunion Tourism, has informed the Carnival Secretariat that La Reunion will host a culinary extravaganza after the carnival to ensure that the visiting press can experience the best in cuisine variety under the same theme that carnival itself is held – the melting pot of cultures.

“It is important for as many press to get to La Reunion after covering the carnival in Seychelles, and we are working hand in hand with La Reunion to make this a win-win for the Vanilla Islands drive,” Alain St.Ange, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, said.

Carnival adverts and write ups are all scheduled to hit readers in the four corners of the world as soon as the end-of-year festive season is over. Carnival specialist, “Soca News," in the UK is one of the mediums contracted by Lena Hoareau, the Seychelles PR and News Bureau Manager in the UK, to work with Seychelles and La Reunion for their 2012 carnival. Emirates, the Official Sponsor of the Carnival, is said to be looking at publishing a feature story about the 2012 “Carnaval International de Victoria" in their in-flight magazine early in 2012. Partner magazines in Singapore and the Far East have also been contracted to bring the colors of the carnival of Seychelles and La Reunion to their readers from January next year.

In the meantime, it is believed that early in 2012, the countdown to the carnival will take place in Seychelles where all merchandising will be launched, the carnival 2012 song aired, and the first announcements on confirmed participants made. “We are overjoyed by the support from the Community of Nations. So many delegations have already confirmed they will be making their way to Seychelles for the carnival in March,” Marymonde Matatiken said.

Two radio stations coming from South Africa and Dubai have also already confirmed that they will be broadcasting live from Seychelles during the three days of the carnival in 2012. Dertour, one of the largest German Tour Operators, is alone making arrangements for ten press from Germany to be in Seychelles to cover the event.

“We have surpassed our own expectations from the interest by the International Media. The carnival is set to highlight the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands as a tourism region and Seychelles and La Reunion can already feel proud of the event they are jointly staging,” Alain St.Ange said.MEDIA CONTACT: Alain St.Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, Email: alain.s@seychelles.com

New IMEX America show and The Estoril Congress Center make donation to two Las Vegas nonprofits bringing support and holiday cheer

New IMEX America show and The Estoril Congress Center make donation to two Las Vegas nonprofits bringing support and holiday cheer(Forimmediaterelease.net) As part of an ongoing commitment to giving back to local communities, and following the October 2011 Las Vegas debut of its new trade show for events, meetings, and incentive travel professionals, IMEX America - along with The Estoril Congress Center of Portugal - is pleased to announce a donation of US$6,000 to Opportunity Village and The Shade Tree.

These vital nonprofit organizations serve the Las Vegas and Southern Nevada community. Both charities were selected prior to IMEX America to benefit from several of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Organizers used the trade show to help promote and raise the profile of the 2 local organizations among visiting meetings industry professionals from all over the world. Sponsorship from the Estoril Congress Center served to highlight Estoril’s own commitment to the principles of CSR and sustainability, while also providing a generous donation to 2 good causes.

Opportunity Village employs over 1,600 people with intellectual disabilities at 3 employment training and business service center campuses and at a Thrift Store. The Shade Tree provides over 80,000 nights of shelter per year, as well as employment and housing services to homeless and abused women and children - making it the largest shelter of its kind in the state of Nevada.

The Shade Tree will put its US$3,500 donation towards items such as baby bottles and diapers, which will help women in crisis meet the essential needs of their families while they work to gain stability, dignity, and self-reliance. Opportunity Village will use their US$2,500 donation towards purchasing art supplies for their Art Enrichment Program, which helps participants build confidence and self esteem by tapping into new talents and skills.

Commenting on the positive and direct impact that the combined IMEX America and Estoril donation will make, Opportunity Village’s Sales Account Executive, Rachel Allen, said: ”This will make a huge difference in supporting our activities. We will be able to purchase supplies for our Art Enrichment Program where the special individuals that we serve can do what they love - creating art.”

Beyond just writing a check to these organizations, during IMEX America at the Sands Expo (which is connected to the show's Headquarters Hotel, The Venetian®|The Palazzo®), October 11-13, 2011, IMEX America and Estoril also hosted tours to Opportunity Village and The Shade Tree so that show attendees could see and experience the great work these two organizations are doing first-hand. This experience so touched some IMEX employees (headquartered in the South of England), that they have created an office donation drive for books, toys, and clothing, with items being shipped to The Shade Tree shelter in time for the holidays.

Commenting on the importance of corporate responsibility in our communities, Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group, shared: ”Especially in today’s challenging economic times, it is so important that we come together as business people around the world to assist those in need. Opportunity Village and The Shade Tree do amazing work and we – along with Estoril - are thrilled to be able to lend a helping hand through education, access, greater awareness, and through donation.”

IMEX America will return to Las Vegas in 2012 on October 9-11, when further CSR and sustainability initiatives will be built into the trade show.

IMEX in Frankfurt was the first ever trade show to launch annual “green awards" in the industry. It is a key part of the IMEX Group’s vision and values to promote environmental education and green meetings best practice, while also running a number of programs designed to improve knowledge and understanding about the benefits of corporate social responsibility and its place within the global meetings industry.
