Seychelles Steps Up Bilateral relations with UAE

Following the opening of the new Seychelles Embassy in Abu Dhabi last Thursday, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam, has met with his counterpart, the Minister for Foreign Affairs for the United Arab Emirates, His Highness, Sheik Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with the Minister for the Interior, His Highness, Sheik Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister.

These discussions follow pledges made by Minister Adam and the new Seychelles Ambassador to the UAE, Mr. Dick Esparon, to strengthen existing ties and cooperation’s, which the Ambassador described as marking a new era of in bilateral relations between the two nations.

“Seychelles foreign policy has grown and evolved into an active economic diplomacy that recognizes that we cannot just wait for the world to come to us. We must reach out to the world… And we believe there is no better place to start than in Abu Dhabi,” said Minister Adam.

In the meeting with Sheik Abdullah, the two ministers exchanged views on measures that need to be taken to resolve the situation in Somalia. Minister Adam also took the opportunity to thank the UAE for its support in the fight against piracy, notably through the recent donation of a state of the art Coastguard base and radar system that would better allow the patrol and surveillance of Seychelles waters.

The two Ministers also discussed a special conference on Somalia and on piracy that the UAE will be organizing in Dubai in 2012 to further raise funds for the fight against piracy, and to strengthen nation building efforts within Somalia.

In the meeting, both Ministers reiterated their joint commitment to continue to prosecute pirates, as a key aspect of ending the impunity associated with the crime.  The UAE has already arrested and prosecuted a number of Somali pirates.

In addition to piracy, the Ministers also discussed the future widening of cooperation in renewable energy, following from the President’s meeting with the CEO of MASDAR.  Minister Adam highlighted, that the potential for investment in renewable energy in Seychelles would be an example of public private partnerships.

During his inaugural remarks at the new Seychelles Embassy, the Minister described the UAE engagement with renewable energy as visionary:

“All countries that believe in sustainable development must look seriously towards fast tracking investments in renewable energy to be able to contribute to the global effort to reduce emissions.  Despite being an oil producer, the UAE has displayed a long term vision which is exemplary in this regard, through the creation of MASDAR city- which will be the world’s first carbon neutral city.

“Our government is in the process of passing new legislation that will empower the independent production of renewable energy in a cost effective manner.  The new legislation will also facilitate the creation of commercial business driven models.  We firmly believe that renewable energy can create new opportunities for growth in this time of global distress, and the cooperation between our two countries can serve as an instigator of successful models that can be replicated elsewhere.”

In the meeting with the Interior Minister, HH Sheik Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister Adam pursued the discussions on a future agreement on visa waivers for Seychelles nationals visiting the UAE which has been ongoing between the ministry and the UAE Embassy.

In the discussions, HH Sheik Saif indicated the willingness of the UAE to bring these discussions to a fruitful conclusion as soon as possible, and noted that this would be done as soon as all the necessary requirements of legislation and process were completed.  He noted for example that the UAE had introduced a system of iris recognition at all airports and this brought certain specific challenges that need to be addressed before visa waiver agreements could be concluded.

Puerto Rico posts strong tourism gains, unveils new marketing campaign to continue momentum

Puerto Rico posts strong tourism gains, unveils new marketing campaign to continue momentum

Puerto Rico posts strong tourism gains, unveils new marketing campaign to continue momentum(Forimmediaterelease.net) NEW YORK, New York – The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) today unveiled its US marketing campaign for the upcoming winter and 2012 tourism season during an event hosted by PRTC Executive Director, Mario González-Lafuente. The “Puerto Rico Does It Better” campaign has already turned the island into a thriving Caribbean hotspot and is directly responsible for a resurgence in US travelers to Puerto Rico that is providing a strong boost to the local economy.

In fact, Puerto Rico’s tourism industry had a banner fiscal year 2011 (July 2010-June 2011), as measured in hotel registrations, and attributes that in large part to the US marketing campaign. Year-to-date hotel revenue per available room (RevPar) has increased 5.8 percent and average daily rate (ADR) by 4.3 percent compared to the same time period in 2010. Demand has been strong, with room night production reaching more than three million room nights sold, an increase of 4.4 percent. This translates to an increase of 8.2 percent in total additional revenue, the highest in Puerto Rico’s history.

“The ‘Puerto Rico Does it Better’ campaign has been instrumental in reshaping how the island does business,” said González-Lafuente, “The campaign played a significant role in the island’s first increase in visits from US tourists in five years. The hospitality industry has been a major driver of economic growth, even during a recession. We are working to continue this trend and to make Puerto Rico the undisputed number-one vacation destination in the Caribbean for our fellow Americans.”

The US tourism campaign, which is budgeted at US$20 million and runs through June 2012, uses both traditional and new, innovative media and marketing tactics to reach its audiences. This year’s program places an increased emphasis on social media to reach American tourists. This includes search engine marketing and optimization, the launch of official Twitter feeds, YouTube videos and Flicker images, new smart phone applications, and a re-vamped website – www.seepuertorico.com– where would-be travelers can learn about the island through written and video content, find promotional packages, and even book travel directly.

The launch used nine of Times Square’s famous electronic marquees simultaneously lit with the campaign’s new ads. These ads – which feature images of tourists enjoying activities such as golf, snorkeling, and gaming – will also be displayed on billboards, airport and bus shelter dioramas, and in newspapers and magazines in major US markets. Specially-branded television ads and programs, such as the Puerto Rico-sponsored 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting on November 30, will give viewers a spectacular look at the island. Finally, a first-of-its-kind event, the Yanni at El Morro concert, will see both traditional and new media pushes. The concert, which will take place on December 16-17, will be internationally broadcast by PBS in 2012. It will also be promoted online via a Facebook sweepstakes that will award two grand prize trips and VIP tickets for the show.

A STORY OF ONGOING SUCCESS

Since the launch of “Puerto Rico Does It Better” in 2010, the island has experienced consistent growth in its hospitality industry, now boasting the highest hotel occupancy rate in the Caribbean. Visitors enjoy new boutique, luxury, and business facilities – which include a convention center, casinos, five-star golf courses, and resort hotels – and new properties are expected to open an additional 2,100 rooms in 2012. Several of these properties have been certified as “green” by the Green Hotels Association, Green Globe, Audubon International, or the US Green Building Council because of their commitment to the environment and ecological health of the Island.

Additionally, this year sees the return of air service to Puerto Rico from Germany’s Condor, as well as by West Jet out of Toronto. New airline partners also include British Airways and Virgin Air in conjunction with Jet Blue.

“Puerto Rico is dedicated to providing world-class service, air lift and facilities to travelers, no matter which region they visit,” said González-Lafuente, “From vibrant nightlife to secluded beaches, Puerto Rico offers the best tropical experiences in the world.”

In addition to highlighting exciting choices for travelers, the campaign is also showcasing how increased tourism reinvigorated all aspects of the island’s hospitality industry. Small- and mid-sized hotels and paradores – private, locally-owned boutique hotels that meet PRTC’s standards of excellence – are updating their accommodations, amenities, and services. Guided tours are available to meet almost any desire, including a Segway-driven program in Old San Juan known as “Information on the Go.”

Puerto Rico offers multiple advantages and opportunities to Americans seeking an unforgettable tropical escape, especially in the areas of convenience, romance, culture, and outdoor adventure:

• the ability to travel without a passport or need to change currency;

• a modern, first-in-class infrastructure that includes one of the busiest ports in the western hemisphere and an international airport served by 17 major airlines that provide flights from more than 50 destinations;

• breathtaking natural beauty, from unspoiled beaches to one of the most ecologically diverse rainforests in the world;

• world-class luxury, including spas, fine dining, golf, and haute-couture shopping;

• adventure opportunities that include kayaking on a bioluminescent bay or flying above a tropical forest on the world’s second-highest zipline;

• rich colonial history on display across the island, particularly in the life-sized museum that is Old San Juan;

• relaxed legal requirements for Americans seeking to have a destination wedding; and

• a highly-educated, highly-skilled local population that, according to Travel&Leisure’s 2011 Edition of America's Favorite Cities, is among the friendliest, most stylish, and most attractive in the US.

“Puerto Rico is a must-see, must-experience destination. Not only do we have the greatest natural beauty and diversity in the Caribbean, but we have the best resorts, casinos, nightlife, gastronomy, and combination of indoor/outdoor amusements as well. It is everything, the combination of all that Puerto Rico has to offer, that makes us such a unique and incredible place to visit,” said González-Lafuente.

Sankhara Luxury Private Beach Villas – the vision of an explorer and entrepreneur of the modern world

Sankhara Luxury Private Beach Villas – the vision of an explorer and entrepreneur of the modern world

Sankhara Luxury Private Beach Villas – the vision of an explorer and entrepreneur of the modern world(Forimmediaterelease.net) Sankhara is first and foremost the story of a man: a soul from the past, an explorer and an entrepreneur of the modern world. He grew up on the Island of Zanzibar, a “Paradise Lost" located in the Indian Ocean, off the East Coast of Africa. His childhood was nurtured by the sight and smells of the emerald sea, lapping upon heavenly pearl-sand beaches. From a young age, he was exposed to Island's harmonious blend of African, South-Asian, Persian and British cultures. Fifty years later, as a successful entrepreneur and world traveler, he yearned to reconnect with his past. He hoped to find a similar sanctuary as Zanzibar, an oasis of social harmony, a place of stunning natural beauty, where he could be lulled by the sound of breaking waves upon the reef - a private hideaway, to nurture his bonds with loved ones and to rekindle his soul.

In 2004, he recalled a previous business trip to Mauritius, a magnificent island in the Indian Ocean - only a bird's flight from Zanzibar - and still blessed with pristine shorelines and beaches. After a long and careful search, he secured a land on the north-eastern shores of the island, at Poste Lafayette - a pocket of heaven nestled amidst lush vegetation. There, he built two luxurious villas, where he planned to spend his summers with his family. During his first stay, he was moved by the breathtaking ocean view, the sumptuous decor and the location's nurturing and healing effects. He wanted others to share these experiences. Accordingly, in January 2010, he opened and transformed the mansions into exclusive Villa-Hotels for rental during eleven months of the year and named them Sankhara … “that which binds all". The perfect name for a sanctuary that gathers loved ones together and beckons each person to discover a deeper sense of inner harmony.

The harmony that inhabits Sankhara is rooted in the owner's spiritual philosophy, which stems from his personal experiences as well as a mix of ancient wisdoms revived by modern voices. When guests set foot into Sankhara, time slows down. There is enough time, at last, to bond with others and with nature, to reflect introspectively and to discover the first threads of inner serenity. Conceived in 2009, the two sanctums represent a unique blend of cultures that reflect the owner's varied origins and life travels. Designed by a Mauritian who studied in France, the Villas represent an exceptional fusion of Balinese and Mauritian architectures. Decorated by an interior designer from New Zealand, the five-bedroom villa - Tiara - has a Balinese-Zen style and furnishing, while the three-bedroom villa - Almira - enjoys a Contemporary Moroccan design.

At Sankhara, guests are constantly pampered by a professional staff of fifteen - including butlers, award-winning chefs and housekeeping - who provide a chic and tailor made service round-the-clock, with a smile and warmth that is synonymous with Mauritian hospitality. Through Sankhara, the owner has created a unique experience, with a service worthy of the most exclusive hotels in the world.

The Villas are located off the beaten track. Devoid of any signage, the small dirt path that leads to the villas can easily be missed from the main road. After soaking in the explosion of colors from the bougainvilleas growing on stonewalls on either side of the path, you reach the large alloyed gate of wood and steel. Seemingly unremarkable, the gate opens upon an unimaginable world of enchantment. The full personnel greet you like a regal figure in the courtyard strewn with coral pebbles. The sweet scent of the frangipani flowers fills the air, soothing your senses, providing a natural and appeasing balm to your journey's fatigue. The Villa doors open, beckoning you forward to discover their secrets. Today, it is still possible to discover a place where the barriers of race and culture do not exist, where you can stop time, momentarily, to bond with friends and family, to regenerate, or rediscover oneself.

A sustainable future for the tourism industry: Cape Town Tourism attends COP17

A sustainable future for the tourism industry: Cape Town Tourism attends COP17

A sustainable future for the tourism industry: Cape Town Tourism attends COP17(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meets annually to assess progress in dealing with climate change, make decision, and adopt resolutions on these issues. This year, COP17 will take place at the Durban International Convention Centre between November 28 and December 9, 2011. As a member of the Cape Town Climate Change Coalition, Cape Town Tourism will attend and have a presence at the expo stand of the coalition, along with the City of Cape Town and other partners.

As one of few urban centers in the world boasting a mountain range in the heart of a city and unparalleled beach beauty from coast to coast, Cape Town realizes the importance of its natural assets, in terms of recreational and aesthetic appeal to residents, as well as their economic driving power behind tourism. Protecting these assets goes hand-in-hand with supporting climate change initiatives, and Cape Town is regarded as a pioneering city when it comes to responsible tourism.

Defined as “tourism that creates better places for people to live and better places to visit,” responsible tourism focuses on minimizing the negative economic, environmental, and social impacts of tourism, involving local people in decisions that affect their lives and encouraging respect between tourists and hosts.

In 2002, representatives from tourism sectors across the board in twenty countries attended the Cape Town Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, at which a declaration on responsible tourism was agreed upon. In 2009, the City of Cape Town adopted the Responsible Tourism Policy and Action Plan, largely as an approach to destination management, to bring about positive economic, social, and environmental influences for all concerned. A Responsible Tourism Charter was signed by the City of Cape Town and leading trade associations: the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA), the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA), the South African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI), and Cape Town Tourism, which commits each signatory to work actively on the priority issues for Responsible Tourism and report on their progress.

More recently, in September 2011, the Cape Town Climate Change Coalition launched the “Climate Smart Cape Town Campaign,” which aims to highlight ways for the public to reduce their carbon emissions. Climate Smart Cape Town brings facts about the climate crisis into the mainstream media and engages the public in conversation about how to solve this crisis.

“Climate change is a global problem – we are all in this together. Cape Town’s response to climate change must be a collective partnership between government, business, and civil society. The vision of the Climate Smart Cape Town campaign is for Cape Town to become more compact and resource-efficient; a lower-carbon city adapting well to the impacts of climate change, protecting its most vulnerable citizens, and building an economic future based on clean development, localization, and jobs for all,” said Stephen Granger, Head of Major Programs and Projects for the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management Department and spokesperson for the campaign.

Cape Town Tourism backs each one of these campaigns and continues to drive responsible tourism principles within the industry, as well as distribute responsible traveler tips with regards to Cape Town’s communities and natural environment.
Said Grant Pascoe, Cape Town Executive Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events&Marketing: “Responsible Tourism philosophies and practices are key in our tourism planning and business; ensuring that we meet current tourism needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Cape Town has been acknowledged by the Ethisphere Institute of New York as ‘one of ten cities in the world most likely to become centers of sustainability by 2020,’ received approval from the Ethical Traveler by being listed as one of the ‘Top Ten Ethical Destinations in the World 2010’ and was the first urban center to receive the coveted ‘Best Destination’ Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award in 2009.

“These awards bear testament to Cape Town’s commitment to Responsible Tourism and the creation of a future-fit city for all. The city has come to realize that we are, in some respects, breaking new ground. The local authorities of very few major cities have adopted comprehensive responsible tourism policies and committed to implementing them with action plans. While there are cities with sustainability strategies and cities with tourism strategies, few link these two in such formal and robust ways.”

Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, said: “Our focus on responsible tourism arises from the vision of establishing Cape Town as one of the world’s top cities to visit, work, study, live, and invest in; however, we realize that for the city to be a great place to visit, it must first and foremost be a great place to live. Responsible tourism aims to not only look after our environment but Capetonians, too. We hope that fostering a greater respect between cultures and involving locals in tourism activities will provide job opportunities for residents and create a greater sense of pride in our city and country.

“Cape Town Tourism has a vested interest in climate change as it is directly linked to responsible tourism and the sustainable future of our city. Twenty years from now, we would like to see the same Mother City we see today, and responsible tourism and climate change initiatives are tools that we can use to achieve this. We must also be prepared for the shift in mind-set and lifestyle that will need to be undertaken by all individuals if we are to build on the enormous value of our people and our natural resources.”MEDIA CONTACT: Cape Town Tourism, PR and Communication Manager Skye Grove, Email:skye@capetown.travel , Phone: +27 21 487 6800, Web: www.capetown.travel ; Rabbit in a Hat Communications, Tammy White, Phone: +27 21 448 9705, +27 73 202 5041, Email:

Helicopter Seychelles is back

Helicopter Seychelles is back

Helicopter Seychelles is back(Forimmediaterelease.net) Capt. Shaun Tinkler-Rose, Managing Director of Helicopter Seychelles Ltd., has written to the Seychelles Tourism trade saying: “A quick word of good news from us!

“We’ve been absolutely delighted with your response to our re-launched services and the support that has been proven by bookings. For that, we thank you so much! The 24-hour service with Medevac backup at night has proven itself very successfully a few times already within the Agusta fleet; obviously this was a service that was severely lacking here in the Seychelles in the past.

“Consequently after judging the current market, we can now refine our published rates to reflect the actualities that have emerged from our first few weeks of operation.

“The NEW Charter Rates document setting our specimen prices for main routes has been very well received.

“You will note that our Bell 206 JetRanger prices remain competitive, these have been tweaked to be a little lower as you may notice. Furthermore, we are pleased to bring our prices for the night-flying twin-engine Agusta 109 into a range which is more accessible to a greater number of potential consumers. This should help with a service that is needed in the Seychelles and should not be only for a limited few.

“We are now entering a period of consolidation – bringing in more pilots and specialist staff. We have also begun a dialogue with helicopter manufacturers to supply us with new larger machines to expand our existing services, and we are planning to launch these new helicopters into our service in the medium to long term, but please bear with us as this will not happen overnight. We’ll keep you posted! We are also looking into something completely different – watch this space.

“We are committed to achieving fair pricing and an unparalleled customer service, then maintaining it. We listen carefully to your concerns and have structured much of our new service around your requests. Please continue in feeding back your ideas (good or bad) to us.

“With thanks again for your support, and kind regards.”

The 2011 Freedom to Create Exhibition donation will continue to inspire Cape Town(Forimmediaterelease.net) Freedom to Create, an international organization that encourages the use of arts to inspire social change around the world, celebrated its prestigious annual Prize events in Cape Town this month. The week-long program of community outreach events that were organized by Freedom to Create in Cape Town, culminated in a spectacular Freedom to Create Prize awards ceremony and concert at the Kirstenbosch Gardens on November 19, 2011.

Showcasing 60 press and artistic photographs by this year’s prize participants, Freedom to Create presented a unique open-air exhibition along Government Avenue in the Company’s Garden. By bringing the exhibition outdoors to this popular public heritage park in Cape Town’s central business district, Freedom to Create hopes to engage new audiences in a dialogue around pressing social issues that the exhibition brings to light. The exhibits will be on display until December 18, 2011.

As a contribution towards the plans of Cape Town Tourism to regenerate key areas of the city as creative hubs to showcase creative talent in the city, and inspire and encourage the development of innovative concepts for creative expression, Freedom to Create is delighted to announce the donation of the 2011 Freedom to Create Exhibition to Cape Town Tourism. Freedom to Create and Cape Town will retain their close link and continue to work together to transform lives through creativity.

Cape Town Tourism encourages Capetonians to take a look at the exhibition, especially during the festive switching on of the lights ceremony on Sunday, December 4 and during the Community Chest Twilight Team Run on Tuesday, December 6.

Priti Devi, spokesperson for Freedom to Create said: “We believe that this exhibition has an excellent potential to encourage creative initiatives and inspire the people of Cape Town to harness their talent through the examples of the courage and creativity of the artists whose works are displayed in this exhibition. Freedom to Create is very grateful for the opportunity to leave behind a creative footprint in this beautiful, vibrant city.”

Said Mariëtte Du Toit-Helmbold, Cape Town Tourism CEO: “Making cities more livable through design and creativity is a core focus of Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 designation. The incorporation of the legacy of Freedom to Create into the Freedom Walk will have longevity far beyond 2011 into 2014 and connect Cape Town to exhibitions in other international cities of innovation and creativity.”

The 2011 Freedom to Create Exhibition combines powerful artworks with important messaging and is a physical manifestation of how creativity is being used to influence social change around the world. It addresses the importance of empowering dreams to transform lives, and celebrates the power of the arts in confronting barriers to creativity and prosperity.

Central to our work is the belief that communities themselves hold the power to creatively address and find solutions to the issues that our exhibitions bring to light.

The Freedom to Create Exhibition offers participating artists an opportunity to share their work on an international platform. Resonating among members of the global art world and humanitarian sectors, previous Freedom to Create Exhibitions have been held in London, New York, Harare, Kabul, Cairo, Mumbai, Sarajevo, and Xiamen, where the exhibition has enjoyed tremendous success and acclaim.

A number of the 2011 Freedom to Create Exhibition artists, made international headlines this year for their courageous and often dangerous work and include African, Middle Eastern, and Asian artists who have pursued freedom and universal human rights in the face of political oppression.

Seychelles moves to make their special and unique tourist island of La Digue eco-friendly

Seychelles moves to make their special and unique tourist island of La Digue eco-friendly

Seychelles moves to make their special and unique tourist island of La Digue eco-friendly(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Seychelles Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a policy for the introduction of clean energy vehicles on the island of La Digue, with the long-term plan of phasing out all fuel-dependent vehicles on the island as part of the Seychelles 2020 vision to turn la Digue into the eco-capital of Seychelles.

Between 2012-2018, all vehicles on the island of La Digue are expected to be replaced by electrical vehicles, and for this purpose a concessionary loan scheme will be introduced, as well as a tax reduction incentive, on the importation of electrical cars

Based on the incentives being given to vehicle owners, it will be a mandatory requirement for them to replace their vehicles within a set time frame of 4 years.

While the policy is adopted for La Digue, the loans and tax incentives will apply to its residents and vehicle owners operating on the island, however, the import tax incentive will also apply to all electrical vehicles being imported into the country.

While electric vehicles currently have the same running costs and energy efficiency costs as fossil-fuel powered cars, electric vehicles cause less road pollution, and with the advent of renewable energy source exploitation, will become the cleanest and most environmentally-friendly form of transportation in the future.

The island would also need to develop electrical infrastructure in order to increase power supply, connections, and charging points. The Department of Transport will also introduce a few electric vehicles for trial purposes on La Digue.

La Digue Island in the Seychelles is today considered a must-visit island on all the itineraries by visitors to the Seychelles. In the past few years, more petrol vehicles have been introduced to the island, and in the recent past, even two fatal road accidents occurred on this tranquil island. The move by the government of the Seychelles will please environment-friendly developers and help consolidate the island’s tourism industry.MEDIA CONTACT: Alain St.Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, Email: alain.s@seychelles.com

“The Gulf Today” takes up the opening of the new Seychelles Embassy in the UAE

“The Gulf Today” takes up the opening of the new Seychelles Embassy in the UAE

“The Gulf Today” takes up the opening of the new Seychelles Embassy in the UAE(Forimmediaterelease.net) The newspaper, “The Gulf Today,” has taken up the story of the Seychelles islands opening their first diplomatic representation in the Middle East and Gulf nations. Seychelles last week opened their latest Embassy, and that was in Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

William Faria wrote in “The Gulf Today: “The President of the Republic of Seychelles, James Alix Michel, disclosed on Thursday that bilateral ties existing between Seychelles and the UAE have been rapidly developing over the years and that both countries were enjoying a cordial relationship both in trade and tourism.”

The Seychelles President thanked the UAE for its confidence in the Seychelles, especially in the tourism sector, adding that both countries would benefit immensely.

The visiting President made the remarks while officially inaugurating the Seychelles first ever resident diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi.

President Michel noted that the opening of the mission is a testimony of a new dimension to the already existing excellent relationship that both countries have. He said the hallmark achievement crystalizes Seychelles’ desire to establish close relations to the countries of the Middle East and the Arab world in general.

The opening of the Seychelles Embassy in the UAE is very timely, given the great political and socio-economic transformation taking place in the Middle East, said the President.

Present during the colorful historic ceremony were the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Seychelles, Jean Paul Adam; Abdul Salam Obaidi, UAE’s Assistant Undersecretary for Protocol Affairs; ministers and senior officials of the government of the UAE; and ambassadors, diplomats, and key figures of the business community of the UAE.

Michel said that the opening of the Embassy comes at a time when the UAE is also celebrating its 40 years of nationhood, a time when UAE is showcasing to the world its formidable achievements.

Describing the UAE as a great friend of the Seychelles, Michel hailed the interest of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his country.

“Special focus will also be on the promotion of economic and business exchanges and interactions between the business communities of both countries,” said President Michel.

Seychelles new diplomatic mission, which is situated in the Muroor area, will also accommodate the new Seychelles Tourism Board office, which will be focusing on tourism marketing activities in the capital.

“The new Embassy will act as conduit between the government and people of Seychelles, to the government and the UAE, and will give a new dimension for interaction and contact,” said Michel. The Seychelles Embassy will be people-focused and efforts will be spared towards promoting Seychelles in the UAE, and the Middle East in general, through tourism-related activities and campaigns, he added.

Opening of the Embassy comes as a logical development after Seychelles resident Ambassador to the UAE, Dick Patrick Esparon, presented his credentials to the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in September this year.

Esparon, as the first resident Ambassador to the UAE, said that he sees his mission as one of great historical importance for Seychelles in its quest to deepen the already excellent ties of friendship, understanding, the cooperation that exists between Seychelles and the UAE, and the exploration and facilitation of new areas of cooperation.

Speaking to “The Gulf Today” after the inauguration ceremony, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Seychelles, Jean Paul Adam, noted that the government of Abu Dhabi has set up an advanced infrastructure in the Seychelles during a short period of time.

The Minister also said that Seychelles welcomed the recent launching of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways’ early this month, adding that the service to Seychelles is an additional boost to the already cordial relations with the emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE in general.

He highlighted the importance of commencing Etihad Airways’ flights to Seychelles, which will contribute in increasing trade with the UAE and encourage businessmen to invest money in the Seychelles, especially in the fields of tourism, fisheries, and agriculture.

We deeply appreciate the strong assistance and support given by the UAE government to Seychelles, which continues to support Seychelles’ through its efforts, said Adam.

The government and people of Seychelles, the minister said, is deeply grateful to the President and the UAE in general for their continued support towards our country.

It is a testament to the special existing friendship between Seychelles and the UAE, that has promoted us to open our diplomatic mission right here in Abu Dhabi, said Adam.MEDIA CONTACT: Alain St.Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board, Email: alain.s@seychelles.com

Kikwete, Chadema reach consensus

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete will soon sign into law the Constitutional Review Bill following a two-day meeting with a delegation from the opposition Chadema that apparently held different views.

This means that the review process will start anytime from now, putting to an end heated debate and forums on the same that recently dominated the country’s political scene.

A press statement signed by the Minister for Information, Culture and Youth, Mr Emmanuel Nchimbi, and Chadema Acting Secretary General John Mnyika reiterated that the meeting was conducted in a friendly atmosphere.

The five-hour long meeting that started from 10am at the State House in Dar es Salaam on Monday, concluded that despite the Bill being passed by Parliament, it would be amended if and when necessary for it to win public trust and national consensus.

The two parties also underscored the need for frequent communications and cooperation between the government and other stakeholders on improving the law to maintain national consensus during the constitutional review process.

The CHADEMA delegation was led by the party’s National Chairman, Mr Freeman Mbowe. On Sunday, President Kikwete received recommendations on constitution review from CHADEMA. Both parties agreed that the process should adhere to the interest of the nation much as it should also refrain from dividing the public according to their religion, tribe and region.

Last week, CHADEMA sought the president’s audience over the constitutional review Bill after their bid to stop a second tabling of the constitutional review Bill in parliament by staging a walk-out failed.

Demonstrations planned by activists scheduled for Saturday to press President Kikwete not to sign into law the constitutional review Act were banned by police for fear that they would escalate into chaos.

The opposition party formed a special committee in the same week, which held the two-day talks with the president from Sunday to present their recommendations on constitution review.

CHADEMA National Chairman Mr Freeman Mbowe told journalists earlier in the week that he feared the president might be fed with wrong information about his party’s stance.

During the last Bunge session, Chadema and NCCR-Mageuzi MPs walked out of the National Assembly in protest of the second reading and passing of Constitutional Review Bill 2011.

The walk-out was effected shortly after the Shadow Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Mr Tundu Lissu, who is also the chief whip, presented the views of the opposition camp.

Mr Lissu demanded that the government should present the Bill for the first reading, claiming that tabling it for second reading was contrary to standing orders, further noting that it had many amendments.

He said the people should get enough time to go through it.

President Kikwete had agreed to a request by CHADEMA leaders for a meeting to discuss the constitution review bill.

A statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications noted that the meeting with CHADEMA was the first in a series of meetings the president plans to hold with leaders of opposition political parties and other stakeholders over the process to get a new constitution.

Last week, the ruling CCM advised the president to meet with all opposition parties with parliamentary seats on the matter instead of CHADEMA alone.

‘Decent work accord to bolster economy’

‘Decent work accord to bolster economy’ - 29.11.2011

An agreement signed between Seychelles and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) yesterday will lead to better economic performance and more effective public policy and governance.

The Minister for Education, Employment and Human Resources Macsuzy Mondon said this after she signed a memorandum of understanding to implement the 2011-2015 Decent Work Country Programme initiated by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Minister Mondon and Mr Dan signing the document

The ILO regional director for Africa Charles Dan signed on behalf of the organisation in a ceremony which took place at the former National Institute of Education auditorium.

Among those who witnessed the signing were Designated Minister Vincent Meriton, who is also the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and the Minister for Social Development and Culture Bernard Shamlaye as well as senior representatives of labour and employers’ organisations.

Minister Mondon said the programme has come at a timely moment when our country is going through a macro-economic reform programme.

She recalled that the stringent fiscal and economic policies adopted, resulted in some job losses.

“However, we believe that investing in decent work, is not only a commitment to fairness and justice, but also a move towards better economic performance, more effective public policy and governance.”

She noted this year the employment department launched its strategic plan for 2011-2015 – a commitment for full employment, where all Seychellois can find decent job opportunities.
It will also undertake a comprehensive amendment and codification of the labour laws to ease business, while ensuring workers’ rights.

She added productivity awareness programmes will also be designed to boost productivity, discipline and hard work in the work place, where harmonious industrial relations will be promoted.

She noted Seychelles joined the ILO in 1977, a milestone marking the long standing relationship between our archipelago and the international body.

Decent work is seen as the “tool to reverse the trends of pervasive and persistent poverty, unemployment and under-employment,” especially in developing countries. She was pleased to note that Seychelles features as one of the countries where the programme has been endorsed at the highest political level.

“I would therefore like to thank President James Michel for his support and interest in the promotion of decent work for every Seychellois.”

Mrs Mondon however said the objectives of the decent work agenda are as relevant here in Seychelles as in many other countries, although we have made significant progress to eliminate the scourge of poverty. But, we should not be complacent.

The minister noted that for instance, we have witnessed significant progress in the employment and labour sector over the past five years. She said these include the introduction of a national minimum wage, guaranteeing decent and fair salaries for men and women and for work of equal value. There has also been an increase in maternity leave from 12 to 14 weeks to meet international labour standards as well as several social schemes to help workers who are either sick for long periods or become incapacitated following accidents at work.

She said we have now seen steady growth in employment, leading to a decrease in the unemployment rate, which in September 2011 stood at below 2%.

Mr Dan, said to date 31 African countries have expressed commitment to the ILO programme. He said that before Seychelles, Benin was the most recent, while Cape Verde is expected to endorse it in mid-December.

Committing itself to the programme, Seychelles is agreeing “this is the way forward”, he said.

“We are here to witness a long journey and one in which the ILO will be there to accompany you at a critical level,” he added.

He said employment is the key to jump start economies and present events in North Africa and the Middle East are strong indications why employment should be at the centre of a national agenda.

Mr Dan said he is aware how Seychelles’ economy is vulnerable to external shocks, which can affect tourism, fisheries, trade and financial services on which the country depends.

The guests also heard presentations on the labour situation in Seychelles by the principal secretary of employment Marina Confait, Maxwell Julie who is the president of the Seychelles Federation of Workers Union and executive secretary Sultan Beaudoin of the Federation of Employers’ Association of Seychelles.

ILO regional director meets Vice-President Faure - 29.11.2011

The regional director for Africa of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Charles Dan paid a courtesy call on Vice-President Danny Faure at State House yesterday.

Vice-President Faure welcomes ILO regional director Dan

Also present at the talks were the Minister for Education, Employment and Human Resources Macsuzy Mondon and the principal secretary for the department of employment Marina Confait.

Seychelles is among five countries under the supervision of the ILO country office in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Mr Dan was appointed regional director for Africa and assistant director-general of the ILO as well as the organisation’s special representative to the African Union Commission and to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in July 2008.

Italian airline considers flights between Mahe and Rome

Italian airline considers flights between Mahe and Rome - 29.11.2011

Secretary of State Barry Faure and vice-president for sales of Italy’s Blue Panorama Airlines Remo Della Porta last weekend held talks about the carrier possibly starting direct flights between Seychelles and Rome.

Messrs Faure and Della Porta during their meeting at Le Méridien Fisherman’s Cove Hotel

Mr Faure – who is also the chairman of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) – met Mr Della Porta at Le Méridien Fisherman’s Cove Hotel in the presence of Captain David Savy, who is the chairman of the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), STB’s chief executive Alain St Ange, chief executive Gilbert Faure of the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority and STB’s deputy head Elsia Grandcourt.

In another meeting Mr Remo Della Porta also met Air Seychelles’ chief executive Bram Steller, Captain Savy, and Mrs Grandcourt.

He said he wanted to reaffirm the intentions of his airline to launch nonstop direct flights that would do a Milan, Rome, Seychelles run. He said the airline has already applied to the Civil Aviations Authority of Italy for designation formalities and they are seriously considering launching flights to Seychelles to fill the void created by Air Seychelles when it stopped flying to Italy in January.

Italy remains the second most important tourist market for Seychelles and many Italian travellers have only this week made it known to their tour operators that they want nonstop direct flights only.

Mr Della Porta confirmed the Blue Panorama Airlines is after a long term association with Seychelles and they want to see if it is possible to conclude all negotiations soon so a formal announcement can be made, to remove uncertainty in the market place.

The Blue Panorama Airlines is an Italian private airline which operates on long-haul scheduled flights. Blue Panorama Airlines is an active International Air Transport Association member which is IATA Operational Safety Audit registered. It was established in 1993 and based in Rome in Italy.

Up Close with Tessa Henderson….the host of SBC’s Paradise FM’s Tessa’s Thursday Trouble

Up Close with Tessa Henderson….the host of SBC’s Paradise FM’s Tessa’s Thursday Trouble - 29.11.2011
‘I followed my instinct and it led me to media job’

From the towers of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) on a cloudy Thursday morning, I met Tessa Henderson – the host of Tessa’s Thursday Trouble (3T).

Tessa and her dog MissyShe greeted me with a smile full of life despite having been at the station since 4am.

A Virgo by zodiac sign, the talkative Tessa Henderson was born on September 5 1981. She is the eldest of three children of which two are boys.

A religious person, Tessa is very active in different church groups she forms part. Those are Jeunes Unis à la Cathédrale Activement Religieuses (Jucar) and the Catholic Youth Pastoral where she helps organise activities for Catholic youths at national level. She also brings life to masses held in different parishes across the country.

Tessa enjoys spending time with her little dog Missy, whom she treats as if it was her own flesh and blood. She enjoys listening to classical music, socialising, taking photos and of course talking a lot.

Inspired by famous American actress, singer, model and showgirl Marylin Monroe, Tessa also likes helping others which she says is her ‘vocation’.

Early life – childhood and education

She grew up with her two younger brothers in the heart of Victoria where they enjoyed frequent play time which she says eventually led to her adopting a tomboy-like personality. However, she quickly admitted this is not always the case and that she still enjoys her more girly side.

“My childhood was not easy, but I enjoyed every single moment of it, like climbing trees, getting bruises and cuts. In fact, 21 stitches are what you get for being a tomboy. This pretty much made up my unforgettable childhood,” she chuckled as she showed me the scar on the back of her right leg.

“I still enjoy wearing fluffy dresses and ribbons in my hair though,” she said.

At the age of three, Tessa began learning English from one of her neighbours – Miss Rouillon. She did her primary studies at the former Belonie primary school before moving to the Belonie secondary school to continue her studies until secondary four. After that, Tessa joined the National Youth Services in 1998 before it closed down at the end of that same year.

Tessa was also extremely involved in school activities like public speaking, singing, dancing and was also house captain at one time, but added that she never once neglected her studies.

Tessa’s famous instincts led her to the SBC at the tender age of 12.

“My biggest achievement as a secondary student was at the age of 12 when I became the host of Varyete Zanfan Seselwa – a children’s programme on the SBC AM radio every Saturday morning. I enjoyed listening to the show, telling myself I would one day host it and finally the big day arrived when one day Saturday morning I heard that the kids who were presenting the show at the time were leaving. So I phoned the producer and told him I was interested in hosting the show. He agreed. I was ecstatic,” she said happily.

Tessa during one of the many interviews she has done as a radio producer

While still at the Belonie secondary school, Tessa had to leave for England for one year in 1995 to be with her mother who was pursuing further studies there. She returned to Seychelles in 1996 and went back to hosting the Varyete Zanfan Seselwa children’s programme on the radio.

She attended the Seychelles Polytechnic where she did her O-levels and A-Levels, but was still unsure of what she wanted to do at the end of her schooling years.

“I had a strong passion for the development of the Creole language because at that time I always found myself taking part in Creole forums and everything associated with the development of the language,” she said.
It never once crossed her mind that she would one day work in the media.

“After all, I had always been interested in linguistics and anthropology and my mind was already been set on either of the two.”

Work experience

Tessa had started working at the SBC where she remained for two years hosting different shows before joining the Chester University in England where she spent four years studying radio production.

While there, she got a part-time job at the telecommunications company Vodafone where she worked in the sales section and repaired mobile phones for three years.

Her talkative attitude and catchy personality eventually helped the company gather more clients.
“If I ever leave the media I might go to work in a telecom company,” she said.

Tessa eventually began studying anthropology again and got the idea for the Mon Sinyatir AM radio show.

“It’s great that everything I enjoy is related to each other,” added Tessa, who has never really faced many challenges, except for a minor confidence crisis during her studies for her degree.

Life as the hostess of Tessa’s Thursday Trouble (3T)

“I got the chance last year to become a qualified peer educator and trainer, which I think inspired me to begin my 3T show,” she said.

Tessa’s Thursday Trouble show hosts Tessa and Andy

Tessa’s Thursday Trouble (3T) is a programme where young people call the host – Tessa – and co-host Andy Mahoune to talk about the problems they are currently facing.

“3T is not about giving advice but rather giving support to the young people and making them aware that they need to talk to someone who can really help them,” she said.

“Having Andy as the co-host on 3T, gives the show the right balance. He voices out the boys’ views and I the girls’. Sometimes we come in the studio at 6.30pm for the 7pm show and we find that kids have already sent us text messages.”

Tessa added that, however she and Andy are not counselors but are there to encourage young people to talk about their issues and even help them to see things from a different perspective.

“I’m happy though because feedback of the show is quite positive,” she said. “It acts as a motivation to keep the show running.”

At the end of the interview, Tessa had this to say: “I believe everybody should follow their instincts – no matter what people might think or say. It’s a sure-fire way to lead you to eventually become who you want to be.”
