Nine arrested as drug trafficking level increases

Nine arrested as drug trafficking level increases - 15.09.2011

The National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA) has recorded one of the busiest periods for drug trafficking following the arrest of nine drug traffickers.

The arrests were made at six separate locations and resulted in the seizure of illegal drugs with a street value of R300,000.
This is the largest number of traffickers arrested over such a short period and reflects the NDEA’s strategy of targeting the traffickers.
The areas where the arrests occurred have all been the subject of complaints from residents. Those arrested range in ages from 24 to 44 years.
These arrests occurred during the week when the Supreme Court sentenced a 32-year-old man from Anse Royale, Kenneth Bibi, who was arrested by the NDEA, to 10 years for drug trafficking.
The NDEA has noted the continuing trend whereby traffickers use local residents to supply them with the services necessary for them to ply their trade, such as making small payments for services rendered, supplying temporary locations at which to trade, and in some cases foil in which to wrap the drugs. In return the traffickers supply as little as a box of food or other such small reward to enable them to carry out their illicit trade which ultimately destroys the community in which they operate. All of these activities are designed with the intention of introducing an element of dependency among vulnerable members of the local community, whereby their presence might be perceived in a positive light.
Persons lending help to drug traffickers in support of their illegal activity are equally guilty and if evidence becomes available they will be liable to arrest and charged before the courts.
The NDEA continues to seek the help of the public and encourages anybody with information to call them on the confidential line number 4610910. All information received will be treated in a confidential manner.
