Pupils share views on national theme

Five primary schools competed in the final of a public speaking contest, an activity held to mark this year’s Children’s Day.

Pupils shared their views on this year’s national theme, Laviktwar pour Sesel, last Tuesday at the International Conference Centre in the presence of First Lady Natalie Michel, Minister for Social Development and Culture Bernard Shamlaye, chief executive of Children’s Home Foundation Noella Gonthier.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Social Development and Culture in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Employment and Human Resources, was attended by officials from ministries, teachers and students.

During the ceremony the audience had the chance to hear the five presentations, all under the theme Laviktwar pour nou zanfan – Laviktwar pour Sesel.

The contest was open to all primary schools and pupils had to form teams of three - a chairperson, a main speaker and a proposer for vote of thanks.

The pupils were free to use any three of the official languages to give their views on the theme.

Addressing those present, Mariama Kunate, a primary six pupil of Mont Fleuri school said Children’s Day is a time for reflection on the importance of the roles and responsibilities of those who contribute towards the wellbeing of children.

She said it is important for parents to be good role models and to help towards the development of their children.

She called on all children to be respectful towards those around them and to take their studies seriously.

Au Cap school was judged as the best in the competition, emerging in first position, followed by Anse Etoile in second place and third prize winner was Grand Anse Praslin school.

Prizes were also given to the best chairperson, main speaker and proposer for vote of thanks.

Shiela Louise from Anse Etoile primary was voted best chairperson, while Au Cap pupil Kelly Domingue was the best main speaker. The best proposer for vote of thanks was Neil Port Louis from Au Cap school.
