An Indian naval ship will undertake surveillance in Seychelles exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from June 6 to 15.
During the deployment, the INS Shardul -- a landing ship with a displacement of 6000 tonnes -- will visit Port Victoria from June 4 to June 6 and will be carrying out extensive training for Seychelles People’s Defence Forces (SPDF)/Seychelles Coastguard (SCG) personnel on anti-piracy and boarding operations, damage control and fire fighting and first aid.
The visit is part of an operational deployment to Seychelles undertaken by the Indian navy periodically as per the standing request of the Government of Seychelles.
It will be operating in close coordination with the SCG.
A large consignment of ordnance and stores being gifted by the Indian navy to the SPDF, will be handed over in a separate ceremony during the ship’s visit.
The ship will carry out extensive EEZ surveillance in designated areas of Seychelles, during which SCG and SPDF personnel will be present.
During the EEZ surveillance, the SCG and SPDF personnel will be trained in navigation, seamanship and various anti-piracy operations.
INS Shardul is part of the Western Fleet of the Indian navy and is well equipped with state of the art armament and sensors.
The ship has a complement of marine commandoes onboard to assist in anti-piracy operations as well as an integral helicopter.
On completion of the EEZ surveillance, the ship will again visit Port Victoria and a marching platoon from the ship will be taking part in the National Day Parade on June 18.
The ship’s commanding officer is Commander Sanjay Sachdeva, who is assisted by a team of professional and highly motivated officers and men.
