Mr Michel is also president of the ruling Parti Lepep, which is fielding 25 candidates in the ongoing National Assembly elections.
Earlier, another group of SADC observers called on leader David Pierre of the Popular Democratic Movement, which is also fielding 25 candidates in the polls.
The observers – who are led by Rosemary Mashaba – did not talk to the media after the meetings, but in a ceremony to launch her team’s work at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay resort on Saturday, Ms Mashaba said her group is here at the invitation of the Seychelles Electoral Commission.
SADC member states are guided by the treaty and protocol on politics, defence and security cooperation for the purpose of helping them stick to the principles of democracy and good governance, she said.
“I’m pleased to note the authorities in the country had taken into consideration the recommendations as shared by our mission in May 2011, that will without doubt enhance the electoral process in the country,” she said on Saturday.
The mission is expected to give their views – on how voting has taken place – in a press conference on Sunday after poll results have been released.

Miss Seychelles 2012 banner and logo goes public

Miss Seychelles 2012 banner and logo goes public(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Seychelles Tourism Board‘s Chief Executive, Alain St.Ange, has officially unveiled the colorful Miss Seychelles contest banner and its logo.

The unveiling took place last Saturday, September 24, at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort&Casino during the prestigious Seychelles Ball, in front of former Seychelles President James Mancham, Vice President Danny Faure, ministers, government officials, individuals from the private sector, members of the Seychelles Tourism and Hospitality Association, partners from the tourism trade, and friends of the tourism industry.

The launching of the banner was an opportune moment for Jimmy Butt, Seychelles’ Tourism Ambassador based in Lusaka, Zambia, to sponsor SCR20,000 and stimulate the launch of the fundraising campaign for the event. Mr. St.Ange also announced that the Seychelles Tourism Board will now have the full responsibilities of hosting and organizing the beauty contest.

Speaking at the Seychelles Ball, Mr. St.Ange said that the Seychelles Tourism Board will be taking the beauty pageant to another level next year.

“The beauty pageant is meant to bring to the fore, the country's finest talents. The forthcoming beauty pageant, now named 'Miss Seychelles from Another World,’ is planned for July 2012 and is envisaged to attract beauty talents from all corners of the Seychelles Creole islands. It would be recalled that the last Miss Seychelles competition was held in 2008, and since then, it has been dormant, prompting the Seychelles Tourism Board to bring back this much widely-anticipated beauty contest. In the past, the winning beauty queen participated in the Miss World Contest as part of her winning package; now the winner will also take part in the Miss Southern African International,” he said.

The CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board said that the winner of the Miss Seychelles Another World contest will serve as ambassador for the islands. He noted that it will be a unique opportunity for Seychelles to have its own beauty queen at some of the major international tourism trade fairs, with the aim of promoting the islands' profile and in so doing help increase the visibility of Seychelles.

It must be noted that the Miss Seychelles banner has been designed by the Seychelles Tourism Board’s own creative graphic designer, Miss Eileen Hoareau, and the logo designed by David Savy and Gilbert Pool.

Seychelles Tourism Board adopts Global Code of Ethics

Seychelles Tourism Board adopts Global Code of Ethics

Seychelles Tourism Board adopts Global Code of Ethics(Forimmediaterelease.net) The Board of Directors of the Seychelles Tourism Board, acting on Seychelles President James Michel’s message for World Tourism Day 2011, has adopted and pledged its commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. The Global Code of Ethics is a set of principles and guidelines to develop tourism in a responsible, sustainable, and ethical way that maximizes the socio-economic benefits while limiting the negative impacts.

The adoption of the code by the Seychelles Tourism Board reaffirms the government’s commitment for a sustainable tourism industry that protects the environment and cultural heritage and is for a tourism industry that benefits the local population at all levels of society. It also reinforces the President’s message, which called for maximum Seychellois participation in the tourism industry and for increasing Seychellois ownership at all levels of tourism. The Seychelles President’s message to further integrate the Seychellois Creole culture in tourism products and services by showcasing friendliness, colorful art, authentic Creole cuisine, as well social cohesion and harmonious living, are values which the code promotes and which Seychelles is already practicing. It is also in line with the year’s Tourism Day theme, “Tourism – linking culture," to break down barriers across cultures and foster tolerance, peace, understanding, and mutual respect.

This declaration by the board is also a strong endorsement of what Seychelles is already practicing in many ways, as sustainability practices are already being implemented by many tourism operators and stakeholders in their daily operations. This was further reinforced by the board, which also provided its full support for the adoption of the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label as a mechanism for integrating sustainability in tourism establishments, which is very much in line with the principles of the code of ethics.

“The adoption of the Global Code of Ethics and sustainability label further demonstrates our pledge to develop our tourism industry that is sustainable, responsible and ethical. It is an affirmation of our values for developing our tourism industry and this declaration by board was simply a logical step,” said Alain St.Ange, CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

The code aims to promote a tourism industry that is equitable, responsible, and sustainable whose benefits should be shared by all sectors of society in the context of an open and liberalized international economy. The code was first adopted in 1999 by the general assembly of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and later endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001. The UNWTO has been encouraging all its members to adopt the principles and values outlined in the code as their guiding framework in developing their tourism industry. It has also set up a mechanism to promote its implementation of the code by different stakeholders in tourism.

The Seychelles Tourism Academy, which falls under the management of the Tourism Board, is also set to adopt the Global Code of Ethics at its next management meeting.

ITB Asia Stickman trots the world to raise funds for charity

ITB Asia Stickman trots the world to raise funds for charity

ITB Asia Stickman trots the world to raise funds for charity(Forimmediaterelease.net) SINGAPORE – Attendees at ITB Asia 2011 will now be able to contribute to a good social cause while doing what they do best, traveling around the world. Messe Berlin (Singapore), organizer of ITB Asia, “The Trade Show for the Asian Travel Market," has launched a special social media project to help raise funds for its adopted charity – Operation Smile Singapore.

The star of the project is known as the “ITB Asia Stickman" - a smiling, bendable rubber figurine in the signature ITB orange. The “ITB Asia Stickman" and 499 other custom-made fellowmen will be available for adoption at this year’s show at a donation sum of choice. All proceeds from the donation drive will go to Operation Smile Singapore.

Exhibitors and delegates are encouraged to take photographs of the little orange models in different cities as they travel around the world for business or leisure and uploading them onto a dedicated “ITB Asia Stickman" photoblog (www.facebook.com/itbasia) or through submission by email to stickman@itb-asia.com.

ITB Asia will then pledge US$10 for each of the first 250 photographs uploaded to Operation Smile, a not-for-profit, volunteer medical services organization that provides reconstructive facial surgery to indigent children and young adults. The total sum raised will go towards funding approximately 7 life-changing operations.

This idea is the brainchild of Nino Gruettke, the Executive Director of ITB Asia. “Social media has significantly enhanced the way we share our travel experiences, stories, and photos. Our travel photos not only capture memorable moments but also celebrate local cultures, communities, and inspire future generations of globetrotters,” explained Gruettke.

“The success of this fundraiser hinges on the concerted efforts of everyone who owns an ‘ITB Asia Stickman.' With close to 7,000 delegates from 60 countries expected to attend the show this year, we want to tap on their experiences and take advantage of the viral nature of social media outlets to contribute as an industry towards the fantastic work done by Operation Smile Singapore,” Gruettke added.

The “ITB Asia Stickman" project will take place over a year, starting from October 19, 2011 until ITB Asia 2012 - or when the target of 250 photographs has been reached.

ITB Asia is a unique international platform that unites the travel and tourism industry to exchange valuable insights and business leads, attracting 6,605 attendees and 720 exhibitors from over 60 countries in 2010. ITB Asia is also a partner event of TravelRave, a mega travel and tourism festival week organized by the Singapore Tourism Board to be held in Singapore in October 2011. Seychelles State House launches Tourist Day

Seychelles State House launches Tourist Day(Forimmediaterelease.net) To mark the 100th anniversary of the State House and Seychelles Tourism Week, the Seychelles Office of the President launched its “Tourist Day" for visits every Wednesday of the week by foreign visitors to the State House.

This “Tourist Day" has been introduced in order to attract foreign visitors to the State House, to learn more about the historical and natural heritage of the Seychelles and also to expand the possibilities of cultural tourism in the country.

The launch this morning was attended by the management and staff of the Seychelles Tourism Board, as well as a wide variety of tourism trade partners such as the management of destination management companies and airlines, as well as large and small hotels. They were given a guided tour of the State House and its gardens and monuments, just as future tourist visitors would experience.

The Chairman of the Seychelles Tourism Board and also Secretary of State in President’s Office, Barry Faure, thanked the tourism trade partners for the interest shown in the initiative and expressed his wish for active collaboration with them.

“We need the support of the tourism industry to promote this initiative and make it a success. It is our hope that each tourism operator can recommend this tour to their clients. The State House is a national monument that many Seychellois have been able to discover this year as part of the centenary celebrations, and now we wish to expand this and give tourists the opportunity to do the same,” said Mr. Faure.

Mr. Faure said that State House had organized Open Days for the general public since mid-February 2011, taking place every Friday. To date, the State House has welcomed around 5,000 Seychellois visitors who have shown much interest to visit this unique historical site.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Alain St.Ange, said that he welcomed the State House tourism initiative and called on the tourism trade to actively engage in the promotion of the State House as part of the Seychelles brand, where the diversification of tourist activities and emphasis on cultural tourism would enrich the offers available to visitors during their stay in Seychelles.

The tourism trade partners gave their feedback on the visit and expressed their commitment to promotion the guided tours to their clients.

| Tourists can now visit State House

Print this page | Email this pageTourists can now visit State House - 29.09.2011

Tourists will now be able to visit State House every Wednesday starting next week, secretary of state Barry Faure announced yesterday when managers from the tourism industry went there for a tour.
Mr Faure addressing the group in the Salon des Gouverneurs
He was addressing the guests after they toured the gardens and saw the monuments in the grounds and in State House, which is celebrating 100 years since its foundation stone was laid.
Also present was chief executive Alain St Ange of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB).
The visitors will be expected to pay R150 per head which will be used mainly to maintain the gardens.
Mr Faure, who is also the chairman of the STB, said representatives of the industry have been requesting that tourists get the chance to see State House.
“Today’s visit is in response to the demands made by the industry to offer more in terms of events for the tourists.
“We are very happy that President James Michel – who holds the portfolio for tourism – has approved the idea of opening State House grounds as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone, not only to the public but also to our visitors.
Mr St Ange said State House is “one of the unique selling points of Seychelles which is part of our history and the most important house as it has the offices of the President and of the Vice-President”.
Visiting the State House grounds …
“When the President– about a year ago – said we were going to claim back our tourism industry and launch the Seychelles brand of tourism, he was also looking at all the natural assets that we have; all the unique selling points we have in the country which make up Seychelles, and this is why today it is fitting that the tourism trade sees one of the unique selling points that we were not able to use for many years for different reasons,” he said.
He said the office has many functions, but as tourism is the pillar of the country’s economy it was opportune for the President to decide that for one day a week we will be able to open the grounds for the tourism trade for visitors to come here.
Chief press secretary Srdjana Janosevic said since State House opened its doors to public in February, 5,000 Seychellois have been there.
She said yesterday’s visitors were main stakeholders of the industry, including heads of tour operators, and hotel managers.
“We would like those from the industry who have not visited to come because we want everybody who works in the industry to promote this tourists’ day,” she said.
… and the monuments during yesterday’s tour
Seychellois will still be able to visit State House on Fridays free of charge but the few tourists who may opt to go there on that day can be accommodated, but will need to pay the R150 contribution for maintenance.
Visitors were able to see the unique flora of State House, giant tortoises and the mausoleums in which colonial administrators were buried, among other places of interest.

Seychelles Leisure and Business Guide 2012 launched at Top Resa 2011

Seychelles Leisure and Business Guide 2012 launched at Top Resa 2011

Seychelles Leisure and Business Guide 2012 launched at Top Resa 2011(Forimmediaterelease.net) Daniella Payet-Alis and her son, Laurent Alis, Publication Directors of the Seychelles Leisure&Business Guide, have taken the opportunity of the French tourism trade fair, TOP RESA 2011, to launch their 2012 edition of the guide.

The wildly-respected and very comprehensive Leisure&Business Guide has just seen its 5th Edition launched in Paris. In their introduction, Daniella and Laurent said: “In this fifth edition, our aim is still to continue to introduce people and promote our magnificent islands in strategic marketplaces all around the globe. Making ourselves accessible and noticeable remains our primary focus for marketing our destination and businesses as a whole.”

The Seychelles Leisure&Business Guide is used as a promotional tool by the Seychelles Tourism Board Offices right across the world. The guide is also distributed free of charge at every tourism trade fair where the Seychelles has a stand.

Alain St.Ange, CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, wrote the foreword to the guide’s 2012 edition.

Mr. St.Ange wrote: “It gives me great pleasure to be able to contribute to the 5th edition of the Seychelles’ Leisure&Business Guide. which with every edition, is becoming a more valuable promotional tool for our islands.

“Seychelles tourism continues to grow from strength to strength as we enter the phase of the industry’s need for visibility after having spent a considerable amount of time concentrating on creating the appropriate structures. We would all like to believe that potential visitors all know where the Seychelles is located and what it represents as a tourism destination, but this is sadly untrue. While the name ‘Seychelles’ may conjure up exotic images, that does not mean that the people necessarily know exactly where the islands are, or of the extraordinary diversity they offer to visitors. This, then, is our task: to create awareness however and wherever we can and take every opportunity to raise the profile of our islands by utilizing the international media to the full and by embracing new initiatives such as 'Friends of Seychelles–Press' and the 'Seychelles Tourism Ambassadors,' to ensure that the name of Seychelles is carried far and wide.

“This is where the Seychelles Leisure&Business Guide plays such an important role in informing the world about who we are, where we are, and what we represent as a tourism destination that sets us head and shoulders above the competition.”

Mrs. Grandcourt spoke about the milestone now reached by the Tourism Academy. She retraced the opportunities offered to Seychellois students wanting a career in the field of tourism. Mrs. Grandcourt emphasized the need for students to grab the opportunities being put forward by the Tourism Board and its Academy. “We are opening doors for you, and we invite you to join this industry that remains the pillar of our country’s economy,” Elsia Grandcourt said.

The film was well received by both students and the lecturers present. It showed the classrooms in session as it showed students on attachment in hotels and resorts both in Seychelles and in Mauritius. The film also shows in details the needed effort by each and every student who wants to make it to the Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management Course.

Alain St.Ange said, as he addressed the invited guests, lecturers, professors and students, that the government of Seychelles was today standing firmly behind its tourism industry and that there was no better time to join this growing industry that remains the pillar of the island’s economy. Mr. St.Ange reiterated that Seychelles was lucky to have three national languages because of its historical past and that students needed to grab that advantage, as the command of languages remained positive assets for the industry. Mr St.Ange also explained the development of the Seychelles brand of tourism and said that the tourism industry was more than just hotels, and the selling of it was more than just sun, sea, and sand.

The CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board touched on the desire of the country to break into the world of events and he cited the island’s Carnaval International de Victoria; the Miss Seychelles, another world contest; and SUBIOS, the Seychelles Festival of the Sea that had joined the Creole Festival in the now growing list of national events where our visitors join in the festivities and meet us to develop the ties of friendship that remains the important to the Seychelles brand of tourism where we advocate personalized tourism as one of our unique selling points.

“Tourism is a people’s industry, and for it to work we need to ensure that us, the Seychellois are able to have opportunities to interact with our visitors. What better way to do that than in festivities?” Mr. St.Ange said.

Flavien Joubert, the Principle of the Academy presented a copy of the new film to the CEO&Deputy CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board and a Certificate of Appreciation to Mervin Marie of Freelens Production who had produced the film on behalf of the Seychelles Tourism Academy.

Mövenpick Hotel and Resort Al Bida’a Kuwait certified Green Globe(Forimmediaterelease.net) LOS ANGELES, California - Mövenpick Hotel&Resort Al Bida’a is the first hotel in Kuwait to receive Green Globe Certification.

Green Globe CEO Guido Bauer said: “Mövenpick continues to meet the world’s highest sustainability standard, with Movenpick Hotel&Resort Al Bida'a Kuwait achieving 82% of Green Globe’s sustainability indicators in its inaugural year.

“For all Middle East-based hotels, recycling is one of the greatest challenges, with few programs offered by the host communities. It is encouraging to see Mövenpick Hotel&Resort Al Bida'a Kuwait has moved quickly to establish its own recycling program for paper, plastic, and cans.

“The property has also engaged an ambitious 'Zero Emission Aim' regarding their carbon footprint, which includes travel to and from. It will be interesting to see how this target is met via a comprehensive reduction and offset strategy," added Mr. Bauer.

“We have already completed a number of sustainability initiatives including the installation of water-saving devices in all guest rooms and public areas to reduce water consumption, and energy-saving bulbs to save power," said Ramzi Shaban, the Executive Assistant Manager at the hotel.

“Achieving this Green Globe certification has a positive effect on every aspect of the hotel operation, and will encourage us to go for greener initiatives. We also encourage our guests to get involved in our sustainability programs by inviting them to use the recycle bins placed across the property, and making them aware of special measures such as air conditioning cut-off when they leave their rooms, as well as linen reuse," added Mr. Shaban.

Mövenpick Hotel&Resort Al Bida'a Kuwait has also established a reputation for serving the society with active involvement in many local and international charities, and was the first to introduce Opera in Kuwait through a series of cultural and musical events. The hotel was audited by UAE-based Avireal Company, preferred partner for Green Globe Certification across the 20 different countries of the Middle East.

By the end of 2011, Green Globe will have certified 20 percent of Mövenpick’s hotels, resorts, and cruises. By 2013, all Mövenpick properties will have met the Green Globe Certification standard and carry the Green Globe Certification label. This strategy is part of a company-wide program to establish a common and global approach to environmental, employee, and social sustainability.

Mixed feelings on power generation project deal

SOME experts have questioned the aptitude of the Chinese company -- Sichuan Hongda Group which entered into a joint venture with the government last week to develop the Liganga iron ore and Mchuchuma coal mines.

In an interview with the 'Daily News' on Tuesday in Dar es Salaam a specialist in the petroleum, minerals and gas products said the Chinese company entrusted with the two projects worth US $3 billion has no experience in the mining industry.

"The company is not listed anywhere among the world companies dealing with mineral excavation or energy industry.

The recently signed contract seems to be its first ever and this is raising concerns over its capacity," said an expert who preferred anonymity.

Another mineral expert who is a lecturer with the Institute of Finance Management (IFM) Dar es Salaam Campus, Mr Camilus Kasala, tasked the government to state clearly the criteria used to get the Chinese investor, whose competency he cautioned was 'suspicious'.

"In the 500 Chinese companies top list issued every year by Beijing, the company is not among the performers and only appears at the 257th position in last year's chart. This raises questions over whether the company is able to invest so much in the said projects," he said.

The company's website shows that it specializes in producing chemical products, such as micro-fertilizer, feed-grade dicalcium phosphate, food-grade tricalcium, potassium nitrate, among other chemicals. It is also listed on China Shanghai Exchange.

Reacting to the claims, the Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu, said that the government has trust in the Chinese company and has no reason to have a second thought.

"It took us a whole year to 'screen' and pick the right investor. 48 companies had shown interest and I can assure you Sichuan Hongda Group won on merit," he stressed.

Mr Nyalandu stated that the government was keen in the process which involved international consultants, advisers and inter ministerial teams.

He noted that critics of the Chinese company could have based their arguments on information obtained from the firms' website, cautioning that not all details are made available.

"China is the second largest world economy and ranking of companies in China should not be taken for granted. We have many Chinese companies in the country which are not listed as top 500," he explained.

The deputy minister noted that the company also has diversified interests in coal and metal which have market potential around the world.

The Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Organisations Accounts (POAC), Mr Deo Filikunjombe, stood firm for the government.

"I don't want to speak for the Chinese company, but I am glad that the government signed the contract. This investment will mark the beginning of the end of power crisis in the country," he said.

Mr Filikunjombe, the legislator for Ludewa where the two projects are located, said the joint venture was a response to MPs' call for the government to own shares in large investments.
"The government owns 20 per cent shares, which can be increased to 49 as per the contract.

All processing activities will be conducted at the mining site and this is also commendable," he stressed.

The legislator who attended the signing ceremony of the deal said it was too early to start raising criticisms on the investment.

Last week, the National Development Corporation (NDC) signed an agreement with China's Sichuan Hongda Group to implement Mchuchuma coal and Liganga iron ore projects.

Upon its completion, the Mchuchuma coal-power plant is expected to generate 600MW, 300MW of which will be used at the two mines, with the remaining power supplied to the national grid.

TFDA suspends four drugs

ROSE ATHUMANI, 27th September 2011 @ 22:00, Total Comments: 2, Hits: 478

TANZANIA Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) has suspended importation, distribution, sale and dispensing of two types of anti-malaria and two anti-biotics with immediate effect, after some fake drugs were discovered.

The suspension follows an inspection in 390 drug selling outlets that also provided health services in 13 regions. Seven suspects have been apprehended.

The discovered drugs are: Orodar, manufactured by Elys Chemicals Industries Ltd of Kenya, Laifin, manufactured by Laboratories and Allied Ltd of Kenya, Pheoymethylpenicillin manufactured by Zenufa Laboratories Ltd, Dar es Salaam and Erythromycin Stearate manufactured by Astra Lifecare(Pvt) Ltd, India and distributed by Astra Pharmacy respectively.

TFDA Director General Hiiti Sillo said in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday that the seven suspects were apprehended in Kilombero, Mtwara Mikindani, Kasulu, Nyamagana and Sengerema.

"Seven drugs stores have been closed in accordance with the law in Coast, Morogoro and Dar es Salaam regions," he noted.

TFDA also found Artemether Lumefantrine (ALU) coartem, an anti-malarial drug popularly known as 'dawa mseto' manufactured by Norvatis Pharmaceuticals of USA, being sold in pharmacies, with altered expiry dates.

Apparently, the original manufacturer's date was 2007 but had been changed to 2009 and 2012. These drugs were found in Kilombero, Morogoro region.

Mr Sillo cautioned the public to be wary and report to the authority any drug stores selling ALU anti-malaria drugs, which are meant only for public health centres.

"The only Artmether Lumefantrine (ALU) sold in pharmacies have a green label and is very different from those that are directly distributed to public health centres by the medical stores department," Mr Sillo said.

TFDA also discovered fake Ephedrine selling by the names of Elphedren and Elphedrin.

Mr Sillo said among other steps, the authority was conducting an investigation in collaboration with the police, to establish the origin of the fake drugs and carry out laboratory tests on those seized.

The fake penicillin tablets were seized in Geita, while Laifin were seized in Misungwi, Geita and Sengerema districts in Mwanza Region.

Erythromycin Stearate were seized in Geita, Misungwi and Sengerema districts in Mwanza region and Urambo District in Tabora Region.

The TFDA boss has directed district and regional drug inspectors to conduct frequent inspections in their areas and forward their reports to zonal offices in Mwanza, Dodoma, Arusha and Mbeya regions.

Importers, distributors and retailers have been ordered to take care of all documentations on drugs, especially those with batch numbers.

Those who will be found without original documents of the drugs will be held accountable.

Artisans team up to promote local craft

Artisans team up to promote local craft - 28.09.2011

Long time artisans Ridley Rose and Donatien Freminot are holding a week-long exhibition of their work at the Cooperative des Artisans shop on Independence Avenue in Victoria.

Some exquisite pieces designed by the two craftsmen are on display and also for sale during this week’s exhibition which coincides with the Tourism Week.

The two men’s craft exhibition is being hosted by the Cooperative des Artisans of which they are members.

The principal secretary for Culture Raymonde Onezime launched the exhibition on Monday evening in the presence of various guests and friends of the artisans.

Though very small, the display includes various creations such as tortoise, flower pots, wall decorations, ash trays, beauty accessories to name but some, carved out of wood, bamboo, coconut shells and pieces of coral, all ideal for souvenirs and gifts.

Messrs Rose and Freminot said they have been nurturing the idea to do an exhibition together for some time now and they believe the Tourism Week is an opportune time with the theme being “Tourism –Linking Cultures” which is placing a lot of emphasis on preserving our cultural heritage and developing our creativity through our own innovative ideas.

“We need to preserve our identity and the artefacts displayed here today are proof of that,” they said.

The artisans said the fact that the exhibition is being held in the centre of town, the public has a great opportunity to see and also purchase or place order for their products which are made entirely from raw material found here.

“Raw materials abound around us. We just need to see them and use new ideas to transform them into marketable products,” said Mr Rose, who has for some time now been experimenting with crafting artefacts from pieces of coral swept on the beach.

Mr Rose, who lives at Roche Caiman, said he gathers the pieces of coral which he transforms into various items at his arts and craft studio in his home at Roche Caiman.

“It is a delicate material to work with but the finished product is wonderful,” said Mr Rose.

Both artisans revealed that they have never imported any raw material from abroad for their products.

“Everything we use is ours and is found here,” Mr Freminot said.

“This exhibition is to show that Seychellois artisans are full of new ideas and have the skills to produce interesting items using raw material found around us,” said Mr Freminot, whose Sailfish Creation Craft Studio at Anse Louis has a large assortment of products made from a variety of local raw material.

One of the stands at the Tourism Bazaar on Senpa’s premises

Creole dishes are also on sale during the week.
The activities will end on Friday evening with a fashion show by models from Telly’s Modelling Agency.

The ball was attended by former President James Mancham, Vice-President Danny Faure, ministers and senior government officials. Others included individuals from the private sector, members of the Seychelles Tourism and Hospitality Association and partners of the tourism industry.
Mr St Ange said Etihad airline will be offering four flights a week to Seychelles, while the Ethiopian airline will help link Seychelles to the UK and other countries especially in Europe.
He said the STB will work closely with the private sector to overcome challenges in the industry.
Speaking at the event, Mr Faure said the tourism industry remains an important revenue generator and offers a variety of employment and investment opportunities.
“Let us continue to put Seychelles first to maintain the industry’s dynamism to be a model to the world and in the process, winning for our small nation,” he said.
Mr St Ange also spoke of the re-launch of Miss Seychelles beauty pageant set for next year.
He said Miss Seychelles 2012 will accompany the STB representatives at international trade fairs and other official visits.
A poster for the pageant was also unveiled during the evening and those present had the chance to enjoy a video clip to be shown on the SBC progressively.

During the ceremony, 14-year-old Darryl Joubert of the Anse Boileau secondary school, winner of STB’s photography competition to celebrate 40 years of tourism in Seychelles launched earlier this year for children aged 12-16, received his prize of R10,000 sponsored by Jimmy Butt, Zambia’s tourism ambassador for Seychelles.
After that, guests at the ball enjoyed a variety of Creole and Asian dishes and then danced the night away.

Kenya's Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai has died in Nairobi while undergoing cancer treatment. She was 71.
She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for promoting conservation, women's rights and transparent government - the first African woman to get the award.
She was elected as an MP in 2002 and served as a minister in the Kenyan government for a time.
Ms Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, which has planted 20-30 million trees in Africa.
'Role model and heroine'
"It is with great sadness that the family of Professor Wangari Maathai announces her passing away on 25 September, 2011, at the Nairobi Hospital, after a prolonged and bravely borne struggle with cancer," the Green Belt Movement said in a statement.
"Her loved ones were with her at the time.
"Professor Maathai's departure is untimely and a very great loss to all who knew her - as a mother, relative, co-worker, colleague, role model, and heroine; or who admired her determination to make the world a more peaceful, healthier, and better place."
The organisation did not provide further details.
Ms Maathai, who was a professor of veterinary anatomy, rose to international fame for campaigns against government-backed forest clearances in Kenya in the late 1980s-90s.
Under the former government of President Daniel Arap Moi, she was arrested several times, and vilified.
In 2008, Ms Maathai was tear-gassed during a protest against the Kenyan president's plan to increase the number of ministers in the cabinet.
In her speech accepting the Nobel prize, Ms Maathai said she hoped her own success would spur other women on to a more active role in the community.
"I hope it will encourage them to raise their voices and take more space for leadership," she said.
